My 7yo asked me about Columbus Day, and I was like, “ugh, Christ, where do I start?” They haven’t gotten to “Columbus sailed the ocean blue” yet in school. Do they still teach that? I want my daughter to know the truth, but I also don’t want her to be the “well, actually...” kid all the time. My wife is also all about fitting in whereas I am more about subversion and getting people to think about the stupid crap they accept without question.

I don’t know if this is a question or what. I guess it was just something I was thinking about. Thank you, that is all.

Having indigenous people day on Colombo’s b day is insulting in itself. Also dude was Tuscan where al Sicilian or at least southern. And the fuck do the Anglo Dutch have to say to us. I’m both and when my scotch Irish/ Anglo Dane ansesters wher stealing’s each other’s cows and trying not to starve or get got our Sicilian Ansesters wher working our geometry playing bocce and pertisapating in global trade. Hell we are the see pepole we fucked up the Bronze Age empire’s so bad they came to an end.“History is an accounting of the crimes of humanity.” Murdering slaver “adventurer” is a good gig if you want to make it into the history books. Now to piss every one off blaming Colombo for the doom he brought is over stating the case every 200 years or so the whole damnd Afro-indo-Eurasian cultural complex suffered a die back. If you live with pigs in your hut and you meet someone that’s never been around livestock they are going to get sick and die. This prosess probably isn’t the best way to celebrate a people or rather hundreds of people’s each with ten thousand years of history. How about king Philip’s day. Metacomit month? As for an Italian holiday. How about angol’s Are degenerat Germanic scum driven from there Homelands to squat in the ruins of the Roman west....day

Yeah, I just shared this and “Columbus was a horrible person” from The Oatmeal on a relative’s FB post that was talking about how great he was. We’ll see what happens.

Ohio State University employees, as state employees, get Columbus Day off, but they can't take it on the day because school is in session, and the students need all those services the employees provide, so they take it on the day after Thanksgiving and get a long holiday weekend.

Columbus, Ohio commissioned a replica of the Santa Maria that they put downtown in the Scioto River and offered tours on. Once a year, they had to turn it around so both sides would be exposed to the weather and wear evenly. For some reason, this process was ridiculously expensive.

The city father's finally said, "Fuck it" and put the thing in storage.

Italians are white like the Chinese are white. Meaning that they really aren't in the sense that the white supremacists mean.If the Chinese are 'yellow' then the Italians are 'olive'.And from what I've ever known, olive toned skin is desired and considered to be a thing of beauty-so why deny it?

I'm part native American and much of family has more of a blood degree than I do. We have never been for Columbus Day due to his supposed 'discovery' and claim of this land that we already occupied. The fact that he was a genocidal maniac only bolsters our feelings.

Indigenous people welcome the idea of having this day named in our honor and removing his even if it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.Maybe IPD, nope-sounds like beer.

Yes. But I think I didn't express it well, it sounds like she turned her back on her family and her immigrant past. She didn't do that at all, she loved her family and was extremely proud of her immigrant past, she just never went back to Brooklyn and the tenements, she wanted something better, she wanted the American dream - a home of her own, freedom of thought and action, every personal and professional opportunity she could find, and a better education for her children, if she had any. And she got those things, and she made sure her children got them too.
