I can't help but wonder if Trump inspired that hibernation pose. The only difference being that Trump drops off randomly and has actually succeeded in getting his whole head entirely up his ass.

Queen Victoria let Charlie Dodgson know how much she liked _Alice_, and requested a copy of his next book. Which turned out to be a ponderous doorstop about symbolic logic. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/28696/28696-h/28696-h.htm

Honestly? I always thought it was two words "door mouse". Like "church mouse" or "city/town mouse" or "country mouse". I couldn't figure out how it got that name, sounds like maybe that's the mouse in the tailcoat and white gloves that minds the mouse hole entrance or something.

Just went to the new story. Do I want more of Kash Patel and bestiality in my morning? Not really. I do want to say to the democratic nominee for governor in Iowa: Either you are for human rights or you aren't. FUCK OFF with your right wing talking points about trans folk! I really WISH our "leaders" would STOP pandering to the fuckers who won't vote for them anyway.

Guardian: "Todd Blanche, the US attorney general, alerted reporters at the White House to stand by for what he called โ€œa big developmentโ€ in the federal crackdown on voting by non-citizens to be announced by Ryan Raybould, the US attorney for the Northern District of Texas. When it came, however, Raybouldโ€™s announcement, that his office had charged six lawful permanent residents and one undocumented immigrant for voting in federal elections over the past eight years, hardly lived up to the billing." See, that's the thing. You have all this shouting about voter fraud and immigrants voting illegally, and even a AG in a red state can point to hardly any indictments. Because shouting doesn't require any evidence, but indictments, let alone convictions, do.

Every so often of late, usually when the latest outrage occurs, I fantasize about screaming at my former men friends who thought trump was a good idea. Good thing I haven't run into any of them, I might embarrass myself by screaming shart garglers at them, or worse. I would very much like this sort of thing to just go away because, in the immortal words of Barbara Bush, I don't want to waste my beautiful mind on such things anymore.

I'm finally getting to have a much needed and long overdue real vacation starting this weekend. Finally stopped saying, "no, I can't" to my best friend who invites me to join her on trips to Greece (Aegina) where she has a home that has been in her late husband's family for generations, so that makes it far more affordable. Ahh...the baptism of swimming in beautiful waters again...and photography....oh my...that's another big "yay!" for me. It's been too many years since I've traveled afar and I used to do it all the time. My sister has stepped up to the plate to take over my many mom duties so she's a real champ about that and housemate has the dogs covered. It's been kind of crazy the last few weeks pulling this together and I've been full of nervous energy and anxiety, but it's all set now and I can breathe better again.

I had a long but satisfying day yesterday as a poll worker in Delaware. We had 22% turnout, which they're saying is relatively high for a midterm primary, and it was pretty brisk yesterday. A few Democratic incumbents lost, some to more progressive challengers, so I think there's an appetite for change here. I know I went further left when I voted. Our caucus voted to support a bunch of people who won, so yay us! There was also a surprising amount of intrigue (recorder of deeds scandal!).

So now we try to get these Dems elected because if we net one more seat in the Senate, we will have a supermajority (already have one in the House). I'm tired but optimistic!

Good Morning, early bird! Shannah Tovah! Hope your family had a happy Rosh Hashana!

Sounds like there were fireworks yesterday with Kash Patel and the Charles Grassley Committee, and sounds like, from Corey Booker, that 92 year old Senator Vacuum Cleaner lost control of the hearing, as 92 year olds who talk to their Hoovers do. I understand that Senators want to die in the harness, as we all do, but the Senate is not the House of Lords, and a Senate seat is a job, not a sinecure.

KA$H is not a policeman, not a historian, and not even a secret policeman. Ergo, he does not appreciate that this country was late in getting a National Police Force like the RCMP or Scotland Yard or the Surete precisely because the immigrants to this country who came seeking freedom were seeking freedom from the national police forces that were secret police, especially in Germany, Austria, Poland, Russia, and Italy. An Argentinian Policeman who sought to implement national fingerprinting came to a disastrous end. The FBIโ€™s national fingerprint registry still does not have the prints of every person in the USA, as readers of crime novels know, and Americans want it like that.

NEWSNATION: Trump is nearly 2 years into his second term here and we often hear Republicans, including yourself, look back in time of the Biden administration and say you were dealt a hard hand. At what point does this become Trump's economy though? Tariffs were not place under Biden, the Iran war wasn't happening under Biden. At what point does Trump take responsibility for this?

REP. TONY WIED: It's definitely a difficult situation, but if you look at it, these are geopolitical issues that have been going on for decades and decades

This date in history...

2016โ€”D. Trump gets a free 1.5 hour infomercial from all the networks.

2009โ€”Nashua-born news anchor Ernie Anastos tells a weatherman, on air, โ€œKeep fucking that chicken.โ€

**PG note**--I like how the Editor makes sure to note the man's NH roots even though this famously happened in NY. Ernie passed away a few months ago.

2001โ€”Dick โ€œDickโ€ Cheney vows to work on โ€œthe dark sideโ€โ€”his only side.

1992โ€”Rudy Giuliani uses a bullhorn to lead 10,000 cops in a riot protesting a civilian police review board.

1976โ€”Nelson Rockefeller, Veep, is photographed โ€œgiving the fingerโ€ to students at SUNY Binghamton.

1975โ€”After winning by 355 votes, losing a recount by ten votes, and winning a ballot appeal by two votes, notorious Red-baiter Louis Wyman [R]โ€”an appointed but not-seated Senator for three daysโ€”loses a special election to the droll John Durkin [D].

1968โ€”Richard M. Nixon appears on โ€œLaugh-Inโ€ and says, โ€œSock it to meโ€โ€”which, eventually, they do.

1964โ€”UC Berkeley bans free speech.

1942โ€”Off the coast of Africa, a U.S. B-24 spots U-156. On its deck: a big Red Cross and survivors of the sunken RMS Laconia. Following orders, the B-24 attacks. The sub submerges; the survivors are left adrift.

1940โ€”The peacetime draft begins.

1932โ€”Peg Entwhistleโ€™s dramatic career comes to an abrupt end at the foot of the Hollywoodland sign.

**PG note**--John Entwistle has a song called "Peg Leg Peggy". Peg Leg Peggy, she really knows how to hop.

1920โ€”A bomb in a horse-drawn-wagon explodes in front of the J.P. Morgan building on Wall Street, killing 38 and wounding 400.

wait

The ship that sunk it went in and rescued the survivors?

Wouldn't it have been easier not to have sunk it to begin with?

German U Boat sinks British ship, rescues survivors. That was what they did, because The Sea, until we nobly bombed survivors. Then they changed their tune.

Some nations shoot right through human shields, even today.

Saviour of Bread's avatar

It was standard practice to rescue survivors, and either hand them over to a neutral vessel or drop them at a neutral port. If I recall the incident correctly, the U-Boat captain broadcast his position in clear and asked other ships for assistance once he realised how many survivors there were.

There were troops on board so it was a legitimate target.
