Tangential to ICE - the Philadelphia Inquirer has published a state-by-state summary of resistance to ICE warehouse building. Eighteen states in all. One funny update to Wonkette stories about warehouse resistance in Social Circle, GA. The city has locked the water meter going to the warehouse. So no water or sewer. DHS suggested trucking in water, and sewer waste out. GA's two Democratic senators (Warnock and Ossoff) have pointed out that the trucking solution won't work.

"Why the U.S. Fertility Rate Has Hit a Record Low" --WSJ.

Why? I'll tell ya why. To sleep at night. Not just when they are infants

but all the time. All the years. Kid, teen, young adult, and adult.

And just when you think you are done with yours, a grandkid will

pop up needing everything all over again.

Right? "I get it, you're I-gor!"

Just FYI:

When my psycho cousin drained my aunt's bank account in 2014 by forging checks in her name in 5 different stores, I called those stores and asked if they had video footage, and they said yes, but they wouldn't give it to me, they would only give it to the police. I told the 4 different law enforcement jurisdictions where the forgeries took place to request the videos. They said they would.

They never did.

Six months later my aunt died and the cops told me "We have to drop these cases because the victim is dead." They had never done any investigation at all, or even turned them over to the Prosecuting Attorneys.

It's starting out weird on the Street today. They should be happier than pigs in a hollar what all

with Peace for 2 weeks. But they ain't. All the markets are chicken scratching away just to stay even. And oil back up a nice, even 5%. Did I mention we got 2 weeks of Peace?

Whar the Faith in Divine Leadership of OrangePedo and Bibi The Assbite? Did the Caliphate

of Tehran pee in the soup? Well did he? Huh?

Wait. Looks like Anthropic's AI peed in the soup. Dang, ya can't trust nobody no more!

Now the Caliphate says "Whut ceasefire?" And they wanna talk to Lebanon. Yes Lebanon.

Does anyone even know who's on first ?

And all this before breakfast. Sheesh. 🥴

Anyone on Wall Street who expects anything except chaos is very foolish indeed.

Chaos is fine if you get inside info before it happens…

"Is DHS going to get training to fix their murderous rage with no consequences problem?"

How about changing that to:

"Is American law enforcement everywhere going to get training to fix their murderous rage with no consequences problem?"

There. I fixed it.

swmnguy's avatar

That, in a nutshell, sums up the problems between the Minneapolis Police Department and the citizens of Minneapolis over the past 60 years.

The only reason the slogan "Defund The Police" is popular here is that the Police refuse to do anything to fix the problems they have caused. To the point that many of us have come to the conclusion that the police are actually right when they say, "These problems are not fixable and we can only use violence."

So we are left no option but to say, "OK, we disagree but you have been consistent and adamant. Therefore we need somebody else, thanks mmkay bye-bye."

By police statistics, about 75% of what they do involves mental illness, chemical dependency, homelessness, domestic violence/dysfunction, and the aftermath of property crimes and accidents. I think it's more than that. What they do very little of is "chasing bad guys," getting into shootouts, etc.

Which is why we suggest that what we need, and need a ton more of, are social workers and claims adjustors with some legal authority to act. We need very few gunslingers, fighters; violence-workers. Since we pay taxes for "Public Safety," yes; that would mean that we spend less money on the things we need less of, and more on the things we need more of.

If that impacts the Police Union's benefits fund, that's really not our primary concern.

I don't get the gap between the ambitious progressive traditions at ciry and state levels (appears to be so from far away, anyway), and the inability of Democratic majorities and piliticians to do what you describe. If anywhere then in Minnesota, and its cities, one would think. It's kind of depressing.

Whale Chowder's avatar

Because states also have suburban and rural voters, who seem to think that only the application of more violence works. Also police and their unions who lean fascist in even the bluest cities.

swmnguy's avatar

The rot runs deep. And where there's rot, there's money and privilege and vested interests looking to hold their power, and to keep their dirty linen from being exposed.

Lincoln Steffens, in 1904 (I think) wrote a chapter on corruption in the Minneapolis Police in his book, "The Shame of the Cities." We still haven't fixed what Steffens exposed in his journalism. The entire political structure is built around it.

And Steffens hadn't even seen the close collaboration between organized crime and law enforcement in the Twin Cities when he wrote.

It's a long slog. What's better now is the pocket cell phone, and constant video exposing the violent corruption. "Good Liberals" can't ignore it anymore, which is why the explosions of citizen anger are more frequent and more dynamic.

We keep pushing and the damn thing is so rotten, it's gotta fall over sometime.

And then we'll do what we can to make things better. Not perfect. Better. Perfect is not in the human toolbox. So we work for Better. Because what else are we gonna do with our limited time here on Earth?

As they say, it's not a Destination. It's a Journey. As long as we keep putting one foot in front of the other, I say it's good.

With all the real-world pictures available online, why did you choose an obvious AIslop image for the header (look at the finger. LOOOOOK at the finger. See any weird anatomy?)

PeteWa's avatar

The middle finger makes little to no anatomical sense, the thumb is also problematic, at least if you believe in skeletal structures.

And so weird for me. Chatting with my kid just last week about David Bowie (whom he recently discovered) I mentioned that “Let’s Dance”, “Beat it” and “Jeopardy” were on the radio in an endless loop at one time. He wasn’t familiar with Jeopardy so I cranked in on the home system. And now Kihn is coming up today. Weird.
