Balloon Juice blog posted this rant on Christmas Eve and convinced me to finally subscribe (they've been doing a series on encouraging alternative media in these times anyway). So thanks.
Youre right! there's no way to ethically consume shit in our capitalist system. ANYONE that eats any chocolate other than Tony Chocolony can fuck right off because GUESS WHAT youre supporting child slavery! (even they concede their supply chain might not be 100% slavery free!)Shrimp? Just as bad. Have a car, fuck off. Eat meat, Fuck off. Consume vegetables and fruit you didnt grow, fuck off! You can try your best and stop shopping at walmart, target, publix, kroger, amazon... they're all evil and the only solution is to fix our shitty system, which we cant without liberal media. Just do your best, like maybe go to bluesky over Twitter because that fucking guy is beyond and shop local when you can.
I had to end my paid subscription when my ex-employer ended me last December. I still don't have a full-time job, so I have to watch my pennies, but I just signed up for a paid sub again. This was a possibly rash decision sparked by my anger at the purity babies, but I also want Wonkette to be around forever. We need you.
OK, I've not seen any "anti-Substack" stuff - so this was a bit of a shock. Where is it coming from?
With mainstream media now bending the knee, losing independent media would play straight into the hands of the authoritarians/oligarchs who want to close down all criticism and independent thought.
If/when finances allow you will be the second Substack, (after Jeff Tiedrich), that I upgrade to paid. You do great work. Thank you.
As I've increasingly backed away from legacy media, Substack has become one of my primary sources for news. I love Wonkette because even though it's an opinion platform, you link to your sources. Your opinions are backed up by facts and reporting, not lies and conspiracy theories. I've never come across any Nazi garbage, but I don't go looking for it. I'm sure their algorithm doesn't recommend any of those sites to me because my reading habits are decidedly liberal. So I'm not walking away.
Thanks Trix, for this very good outrage-mommy-blogger thing you've written. I never want you to be outraged, because that generally means something yucky is going on, but I sure do like your "MOM IS FUCKING PISSED RIGHT NOW!" posts.
This "I'm leaving!" crap reminds me of so many things, so many stupid purity-pony moves. If I was a true and faithful purity pony, I'd never eat any food that wasn't grown or made by a large corporation or coming to me from farther than 20 miles, I wouldn't own or gas up a car, and OH YEAH, I wouldn't be typing this very post because I wouldn't be using an electronic device, the internet that makes it interesting, or any AWS serviced site.
So, yeah, don't dump Substack, do read independent media, and walk some path that balances beween the Good and the Bad, because we can't avoid it all unless we crawl back into the trees, eat twigs and berries, and live like those we've worked very hard to advance beyond.
Life is a series of conflicted moves, and we just have to work it out as best we can.
There, there. I'm staying. I'm still on Facebook too even though I deeply conflicted about that place, because of the connections I have with family and friends that I don't keep in touch with any other way. I've been there for 15 or 16 years, so just leaving isn't an option for me. Thanks so much for all you do. I'm going to up my donation as soon as I can.
Every time FB is mentioned, it's, like, GET RID OF THE FACEBOOK!, and for me, it's just like you said - family and friends and work stuff. It's easy to be pious for other people, without actually walking in their shoes.
For me, what most keeps me on FB is my chosen family of fellow California Renaissance and Dickens Fair folk from the 70s and 80s, including a group named Skyfaire where we share the passing of sisters and brothers.
Not even close to leaving. I have some great Substack writers in my Paid Subscription box and have no intention of giving up the Ogre or Jeff T or any of the other people (besides Wonkette) that I happily pay.
I also hope, soon, that I will be able to write also. Too. Here. Stay tuned. RL issues right now...
As an editor, I must say that it is my professional opinion that your writing is too pedestrian and unimpressive to make you a good candidate for a gig with Wonkette.
Also too... just speaking generally, Becca doesn't typically hire self-impressed twits.
good morning Hugo :) My writers make less than $80,000 but it costs that when you add up the employment taxes and the health care premia (I pay for their health care too!) and the other benefits. They *should* be making a hundred. Or more!
I'm sorry you think writers should make a starving wage, yikes! I think writers -- particularly good, smart, funny ones with decades of institutional knowledge and good solid moral foundations -- should make a wonderful wage. I'd pay them more if I had more (and could hire more people at the same time).
Maybe I'm missing something but the timestamps on your comment and the replies indicate that you wrote your initial comment 2 hours ago, came back an hour later, saw you hadn't gotten the rage you wanted, and commented again.
I think you need to find something better to do with your clearly not that valued by you time.

Don't worry Rebecca, I'm hanging on like a barnacle! A barnacle with money!
I'll keep sending you my dirty defense contractor money if you'll take it. Lolz

I had to back off subscription temporarily but will be back once my financial embarrassments lift. :-(
How did I miss this article? Hear, hear!

Well, we could always...

Fuck I'm old

Ogre has been on fire of late...understandably so.
This is the whiniest way to shill for subscribers.
How about you pay me for the time it took me to read the half of this I read before I just stopped?
This felt like shopping at Walmart and listening to a Walmart employee talk about how shitty it is working at Walmart.
(Also, you pay people $80000/year to write for you? You could pay me 1/4 of that and I’ll churn out 2x the content that’s 2x the quality.)

and yet here you are reading this and spending your time responding.
Whyntcha go hang out with 'Capital W(riter)'? Have a Pedantry Derby?

Maybe that's why you're so angry?
Wrote this on the toilet. Maybe I’m biased, reads better than 50% of what you pass off daily.
Commenting is not allowed on Wonkette. Did you not know that?

Pay-per-plop?
Victor?
What you did there, I see it.
I must have missed the part where we called for reviews. YELP is thataway ----------->>.
If this is a sample of your writing, we'll pass. Thank you for your time and interest in Wonkette.
(well, his;
Anyone else pretty sure they know who that was?
nah, wasn't a commenter. I don't *think*.
I'm not. Are there regular complainers I'm not seeing?
