If you ask a few dumbass Vietnam veterans and conservatives who avoided Vietnam due to bone spurs, they'll tell you that the US lost that war strictly because Jane Fonda posed on a rusty AA gun, wearing an NVA helmet, gleefully stared up in the sky, and sang to the NVA troops at the gun.

If you ask a lot more Vietnam veterans, like my father, they'll tell you that they faced an extremely determined enemy that had popular support, the regime the GIs were supporting wallowed in corruption (much of it American-based), and that Washington spewed out a stream of lies about the war that led to needless American deaths and kept it going on long past the date it should have ended.

What did Jane Fonda have to do with all that?

About time, too. Call a chicken a chicken, my grandfather said. It's actually one of the few wise things he said.

Ironically, after the Black Panthers appeared in the late 1960s and caused their own portion of chaos, the NRA came out IN FAVOR of gun control.

What a surprise.

Only if they avoided being wounded by the brown fecal matter in their underwear when SEAL Team 6 arrived.

Very true...you don't hear from the ones who say "Trahison," like the retreating French Army in 1940, because they didn't want to spend their lives re-living the pain and horror.

They are annoyed by the lousy reception they got when they came home. Dad was either a "war criminal" or a "loser," depending on who he talked to.

Korea veterans were even angrier...they came home to total indifference.

There's a simultaneously ridiculous narrative that MLK was more conservative than modern Democrats and Reagan was less conservative than modern Republicans (unfortunately, some Dems have helped promote the latter). Reagan was always fairly reactionary. And MLK was always more liberal than even today's black liberals (esp. considering the standards of the times). One problem, I think, is that people seem to think that the only prominent black figures at the time were MLK and Malcolm X, so MLK was the "moderate." This ignores the many *actual* black moderates.

The victim to whom you refer is

Abner Louima is a Haitian man who was assaulted, brutalized, and sexually abused in 1997 by officers of the New York City Police Department after he was arrested outside a Brooklyn nightclub. His injuries were so severe as to require three major surgeries. At first the police attempted to cover up the attack. Amadou Diallo suffered this fate.

The shooting of Amadou Diallo occurred on February 4, 1999, when Amadou Diallo, a 23-year-old immigrant from Guinea, was shot and killed by four New York City Police Department plain-clothed officers

That's right...I got them swapped. Thank you for clearing that up. Maybe it's the first name that gets me.

Both were the most horrific cases of police brutality I have ever heard of.

The sheer sadism of the former case still upsets me very greatly. It reminds me of Walter Van Tilburg Clark's classic novel, "The Ox-bow Incident," in which furious townspeople in the West lynch three innocent men when no crime was even committed.

I often wondered, when Abner Louima was lying in hospital, and the prosecutors were investigating the case, who guarded him from retaliation and harassment? And when he went to and from court? He would have had to deal with New York City and state cops who would have little love for him, because of that "blue wall."

That will enable the Militia Morons to hold out for two hours and five minutes:

Two hours of the SEALs laughing their heads off.

Five minutes of the SEALs gunning them down.

After that, the SEALs will break out the toilet paper in disgust.

Trying to convince people you support civil rights while you also support putting babies in cages is a level of hypocrisy I just can't wrap my head around. But, you know, I'm old, so......
