Using militarized terminology to try to solve any domestic issue is never a good idea. Nixon coined the "war on drugs" because it enabled him to go after Blacks and hippies without expressly saying he was going after Blacks and hippies. And it's been downhill ever since.

If anyone is serious about defunding the police, or at least transfer some of their responsibilities to public health officials and/or social workers, the "war on drugs" is a great place to start.

America's problem here is with the very metaphor "war". It solves NOTHING. It sets up antagonism on issues where it only hurts the ability to solve the fucking problem. We should STOP using that word in any context but that of actual battlefields. This bullshit of casting every single aspect of life as some violent struggle only poisons discourse, and offers up an excuse for the worst kind of behavior on the part of the legal system.

Sorry; it's a drug*. You can look up its pharmaceutical effects and everything.

Where we as a society still (after 50 years!) need education is in this: alcohol is a drug. Aspirin is a drug. Coffee and cigarettes are drugs. So are Benadril, gabapentin, Aderall, levadopa, and thousands of others.

"Food" isn't good or bad; it depends on which food and how much and who and when. Same with drugs.

* Like tobacco and other plant-derived drugs, it's actually several drugs at once.

WA doesn't have that problem, cops around here didn't care if you smoked pot. I smoked pot in my front yard on a busy street in 1980, cops saw me smoking all of the time.
