If the Dems said 68 votes was a mandate, the GOPers would say, "No, it takes 70 for a mandate. After all, 60 is just barely enough to get post offfice named. Seventy votes is a blind date, or a J-Date, but it's not a mandate." If the bill got 70 votes, the GOPers would say, "No, 80 is a mandate, 70 is just a squeaker." Und so weiter.

Heard that one live on NPR that year (which I think might have been 2006 when the Dems got the House back, but no matter) and it was awesome when Karl got his ass handed to him later that very evening. He lost all the credibility he had previously accrued. Which was less than infinitesimal except to the PACs who kept shoveling money at him until last year. Now he's done, right? Because Romney lost, right? And McCain lost. And Chimpy shamed himself and the whole country, right?

So why does he still exist in Mediaspace?
