In Frankfurt airport. Caught the very early flight out of Madrid with a very tight layover, though we might miss our flight thanks to a long walk between gates.

Needn't have worried since the plane had a mechanical so we've been three hours in the terminal. Now finally on a bus to the apron where the replacement plane is but that's been fun too. Doors unlockable because the flight had expired. Police called because finally getting the door open kicked an alarm. This is going to be a long day .

Last time I was at Frankfurt some mooks had just tried flying gasoline bombs from London to Detroit. Took HOURS to get through (everybody), and they looked at me really strangely when they found the cobblestones I had swiped in Prague in my carry-on bags.

Bitter Scribe's avatar

Uh...there are rags, bottles and gasoline for sale in Detroit. Did those guys know that?

I believe the point was to explode the airliners en route, but I'll send them notes! ;-)

BTW, being from Detroit myself, and apropos of incendiaries, Devils' Night is a thing. ;-)

They all want to drag us back to the age of the Great Game, where globe-striding despots carved up the world into their personal fiefs.

Apropos, I'm reading Richard Pipes' "History of Russia under the Old Regime," and it's about 200 years of the Muscovy gradually subjugating their entire empire into being effectively slaves. It's really depressing how much I see that history replaying itself right now.

Basically: any data you don't hacked must be on systems not connected to anything, ie. the internet. I believe this is part of why many companies are moving their systems off the "cloud" and back into their own data centers.

tek's avatar

This is a tough one, because doing your own on-premises data storage costs quite a bit more.... and creates issues with disaster-tolerance etc..

Some companies are doing "private clouds" but even those are almost never air-gapped.. and with all the interfaces to other companies in the mix, truly air-gapping is probably not possible in this modern world.

Land Shark 🇺🇦 🏳️‍⚧️'s avatar

It is hard, true. What I have seen over the last five or so years is some systems moved back, creating the evil "hybrid" data center. Put the non-PCI/PII data in the cloud and keep the good stuff in your data center. Even that is easier to secure, as I can control the interconnection from my in-house data center to the cloud service with one connection.

But mostly you're right ... it is next to impossible to manage an air-gapped system. They still exist in many banks and government ... we have customers with them.

Jen's Taking Greenland's avatar

wonder how long now until we learn how disaster tolerant the cloud truly is. I had it pegged for 27ish, but it might be earlier now

Land Shark 🇺🇦 🏳️‍⚧️'s avatar

It is as tolerant as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are willing to pay for that tolerance.

tek's avatar

It can be pretty tolerant, for some values of "disaster" ..

very straightforward to have multisite redundancy etc.

But

A lot of companies don't look closely at what they are buying, they just assume that nothing can go wrong because "cloud"
