True story: May or may not be doom related, have not decided

So co worker had inherited, among other things, some nazi memorabilia armband (her dad's dad brought it back, it was a thing in WWII) and she was wondering if she should destroy it or ebay it. I told her just to fire it up, for what it was, doubt it'd be worth much, the things were on literally every nazi body. Boss man spoke up that Destroying It Was No Better than Destroying the Stone Buddahs

And I was all...the fuck you talking about, boss man? A: Stone Buddhas were a unique achievement of art and culture, while some nazi shit was /literally on every goddamned nazi body, and B: comparing a world heritage site to an armband is stretching things pretty far and C: if people are that hard up for a nazi arm band it can be reproduced, while the stone Buddhas cannot be.

Boss man is a Libertarian, so this explains much.

Anyway, I then suggested co worker look and see if a museum might be interested.

Moral of the story: Just cause you the boss don't mean you can get away with saying stupid shit.

Boss man: "I da boss."

Response: "Cream rises to the top until it sours."

"Hello, this is the fifth museum you've called today."

"How did you"

"Of course normally I'd not know that, but this dialog needs exposition."

"Oh, yes, of course."

"So... you called... because?"

"Right, you see, I have this"

"Nazi arm band you think we'd be interested in?"

"Yes, how did you"

"Exposition. You're like the 20th caller with one of those, and that's just today. I'll tell you what I told them all: burn that shit."

"That's exactly what the other four museums said, except for the we've already got one part."

"Well, we do. Something like ten of them, actually. You know what we do with any more we get?"

"Burn that shit."

"Exactly. Have a nice day."

"You, also, too."

TerseNurse's avatar

i'd burn that shit.

Noma Larkey's avatar

Yeah. I'd want it out of my house ASAP. Burning it seems appropriate to me.

Jen has Puce Sarcasms's avatar

right? Even if it was worth a mint, there is no way I could live with profiting off that shit.

It is not even an artifact. I mean it is over the 50 year thing, but it's some mass produced propaganda shit

Bobathonic, Dingus Crusher's avatar

Oy!

Museum is right, like a service museum or some such.

I like to poke around in shops in Fredburg, and there are a couple that will have NAZI shit. I think some of them are reproductions, which is grosser to me.

I know of two privately held WWII artifacts, my friend has a Japanese flag and my Dad has (had?) a NAZI pocket knife (he collects knives, but that might've been a good one to pass up. I gave him a Ghurka knife, which I think is a bit less contentious.)

Jen has Puce Sarcasms's avatar

If part of a bigger collection, I don't really see an issue. If the collection is all nazi shit though, that is when I look a little askance XD After all, folk brought them back from WWII as spoils of war I mean war trophies I mean...no, there is no good way to spin that shit XD Not even sorry, what a ghoulish practice that shit was.

Craig Nixon's avatar

Wait until they hear what the Viet Cong brought back as trophies.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s push to freeze rents for nearly one million New York City apartments cleared a major hurdle on Thursday night when a city panel backed rents that included leases with no increases.

In a preliminary vote, the panel, the nine-member Rent Guidelines Board, supported increases of between 0 and 2 percent on one-year leases, and 0 and 4 percent on two-year leases for rent-stabilized apartments. A vote on the final numbers, which will fall within those ranges, will take place on June 25.

The vote was seven in favor, one against and one abstention, with the two representatives of landlords not voting yes.

“New Yorkers are being crushed by the cost of living, and they need real relief,” Mr. Mamdani said in a statement after the vote...

The rent-stabilization system... was designed to protect renters from price shocks, and it has largely moderated increases: A household that rented an apartment that was $2,800 in 2019, and renewed a lease every year, would pay about $3,250 monthly today.

The board bases its decisions on the economics of rent-stabilized buildings, renter incomes, wage data, inflation and changes in the city’s housing supply, among a host of other metrics...

My rent stabilized apartment on West side 2023 was $1850/m. There is nothing in that neighborhood under $2400/m now.

that is a weird way of putting it. Why not say that the landlord reps voted no and absent? Woulda saved column space and errything

Avoiding 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺 goes back to the Roman Code of Justinian...

It allowed for the removal of judges who were "under suspicion".

In the 1300s, that principle was part of English law emphasizing that justice must not only be done but seen to be done...

EDIT I'm not sure when spell check became what it is, but geebuzz.

Funny that. A certain quisling six seem to have missed that part of Olde English Common Law.

Jen has Puce Sarcasms's avatar

Two laws we needed decades ago:

1: No political critter should be allowed to invest in jack shit, (they can put their crap in a blind whatsitcalled, but no touching by them until after they leave officce) and

2: No political critter should be allowed to go to some partisan jerb within so many years of entering or leaving office.

R. Riddle's avatar

And 3) Tax returns for the past five years must be made fully public within 30 days of filing to run for office. No exceptions and you're taken off the ballot if you don't comply. Annual returns made public within thirty days of 4/15 each year. No exceptions. You are automatically kicked out of office if you don't comply and cannot run for Federal office or hold an appointed position again. Period.

Jen has Puce Sarcasms's avatar

ooo yes. Adding that!

Amongst the laws we needed decades ago are such diverse elements as....

We DO have rules like that at lower levels of govt here in Ohio, but they deal mostly with working for vendors who do business with govt entities. If I recall correctly, you have to wait a whole year before being able to work for said vendor. It's in the ethics rules, but I'm sure those get bent as desired in certain places.

data_ninja's avatar

This of course allows governor DeWine to appoint a new AG in the meantime, and it will probably be the one on the ballot right now to give him that incumbent boost.

𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘺: A three-year longitudinal study has debunked the long-standing myth that cognitive decline is an inevitable part of aging. Tracking nearly 4,000 participants aged 19 to 94, researchers found that the human brain remains “trainable and rewirable” across the entire lifespan.

Using a new multidimensional metric called the BrainHealth Index (BHI), the study demonstrated that consistent, targeted mental habits, even just 5 to 15 minutes a day, can measurably increase brain performance, regardless of one’s starting point or age...

long-standing myth that cognitive decline is an inevitable part of aging.

Was this a long standing myth? I mean, I know the likelihood goes up, but I've known a lot of spritely olds in my time who are still quite active and on it, well into their 90s.

Heck, my grandmother was still driving around her land yacht into her 90s and mostly running her church. Didn't really slow down until the final few months.

Course most my people are not that long lived so I doubt I will have to worry about it

Marcus Damicus's avatar

Jen has Puce Sarcasms's avatar

Well yeah, like I said it is more likely. But I do not recall it being considered an inevitable. Especially since those same people seem to even tacitly admit that as they often leave out one specific old in all their too old talkin. So even then it is Not All Olds

No, it's bullshit. Here is how we know:

two anonymous sources said “the search was related to an investigation opened during the Biden administration that has continued, examining possible corruption and bribery related to marijuana dispensary businesses.”

No, it wasn't. We would have heard about it if it was, for one thing, and two, this FBI lies about everything, so I am 99.9% sure the press was handed a bogus line

Opalescent Riddles's avatar

I don't know if we would have heard of it. But agreed that this FBI lies about everything, and the line about it starting during Biden is likely bullshit.

Jen has Puce Sarcasms's avatar

We totally would have. The FBI is filled to the brim with republicans who like nothing better than bringing down a high ranking dem.

We would 100% have heard about it.

Opalescent Riddles's avatar

Now I see your point. If it actually HAD happened under Biden, there would have been blabbing, but there wasn't, therefore...
