Kittens are irresistible, precious delights... What small cats may lack in dimension, they generally make up in ferocity

For a person occupied by cats for much of life, people find it funny that I've only raised one from kittenhood... And he's right here now!

All the others were hard luck stories until they washed up onto Playa Shocky, where life turned good...

Apparently these adorable little guys are exceptional hunters. I suspect the last thing that their victims think is " How cute is that!" then the screaming begins.

Peeing outside is a trip to jail and a charge for public intoxication in my college town. Even if you’re sober.

Other opportunities for this adventure with the popo include choosing to walk home instead of riding with an intoxicated driver (walking PAST the police station for safety!), exiting a bar to get into a taxi, or walking home alone in the dark.

They wonder why people hate cops but cops ticket and arrest college students for pretty harmless nonsense while bodies of missing college girls rot in shallow graves and the killers walk free.

Yay college!

Many of my nerdy stem engineer friends were arrested in college for booze going in or coming out. The rest of us got lucky. Except the ones the killers got to.

Yeah, when I first moved to Texas over 20 years ago I left the bar one night and told a new friend I was going to walk the 4 blocks home in stead of driving, he cautioned against it "you'll get stopped for PI!" (Public intoxication) No good deed goes unpunished.

Expand full comment
Sunshine Moonshine's avatar

Yeah the dangerous stuff we did to avoid PI arrests was pretty shameful. But at least no one walked on sidewalks after last call. God forbid people go home alone. Much safer to go home with a guy you kinda know ish, even if he’s a bit handsy, because they never arrested people in groups.

The closure of the Greyhound station in Philly has been a complete fiasco. They had a proper indoor waiting area with a place to get coffee and bathrooms and whatnot and they up and sold it, probably because they expect the property to become part of the new 76ers arena (which Chinatown very much DOES NOT WANT in their backyard, thanks). Anyway, people were just having to wait on the sidewalk in the rain in the middle of the block on Market Street because the new "station" was just a ticket window and also the Greyhound and other buses were blocking the stops for city buses so now they pick people up on a slightly better but still pretty random sidewalk a few blocks away. Seems to me with all the development going on by the Amtrak station they should just put the buses there, too, but what do I know?

They closed the one in Corpus Christ a few years ago, I don't know where people get on or off now. My number one son has used it in the past, so our little family might be affected by this short sighted trend.

That was the route they chose here in NOLA--consolidated all of the city's scattered passenger railway stations and the bus station into one Union Passenger Terminal. Amazingly, considering this is New Orleans we're talking about, it was completed in 1954.

There was a Greyhound station in my city right in the downtown area, making it very convenient for people who did not have transportation and for the 30,000 college students who also live here. But then they moved it to the far south side of the city, and then they moved it again to the far north side of the city, and then they moved it to the Midway Truck Plaza SEVEN MILES west of town, and there is no transportation available into the town from there other than by taxi or Uber.

Expand full comment
Emil Muz's avatar

Same here in Dayton. It was downtown, then they moved it out way out to the northwest part of town, which is close to I-70 but not exactly convenient to get to.

Has anyone else ever tried to uninstall PDF suite 20? I have tried and tried, and every time the process is somehow interrupted and I get an error message and a bland "PDF suite installation was interrupted" message from PDF suite 20, indicating that they've somehow built defenses against customers changing their minds. WTF? Is this just another facet of late-stage capitalism, the captive consumer? Once we hook you, we'll never let you go?

Seconded. Also if their uninstaller keeps failing go fetch a new installer for PDF suite 20 and see if it doesn't give you an "uninstall" option when you run it that is more successful.

Did you know that Social Security will suspend a person's SS, SSI and SSDI benefits if they are confined to a jail, prison or other penal institution for more than 30 continuous days due to a criminal conviction? Congress first enacted restrictions on the payment of Social Security benefits to incarcerated individuals in 1980, and the restrictions were expanded over time.

I think this is potentially a violation of an individual's 6th Amendment right to representation by an attorney, because the incarcerated person may have no income other than SS and SSDI with which to hire an attorney to appeal their conviction or to sue the jail or prison for alleged abuse. It also deprives the individual of funds needed to re-enter the community after their release, since SS and SSDI payments are not resumed until a month after their release. They get out of prison and have no money for food, housing, utilities, clothing or other essentials because SS pays everyone in the month that follows the month in which they are due.

Correct. If you earned it, you earned it. Incarceration does not change that fact. Shame on Congress. SHAME!

Plus they demand repayment of whatever was distributed via direct deposit before the system reported a person incarcerated. Especially rough when the person is receiving disability on account of severe mental illness, and a psychotic break was what landed them in jail, where they received no treatment so things just got worse. There's no way out.

Ta, Rebecca. Sorry we can't make it to your brunch on the first; we go back to work on the second. Ta, Martini. Smol cat for the win! Good day, beloved Wonketteers. I love and appreciate you all and I bless us all with love, health, peace, and grace.

Please, please stay safe. Wear a mask or two, wash your hands, sanitize when you cannot wash and let the sanitizer dry completely, stop touching your face, take Vitamin D, get one of the new vaccines as soon as you're able, avoid indoor and crowded outdoor gatherings and when you must meet, remove masks only to eat, drink, and take quick photos, and stay the fuck away from me and anyone with whom you do not share a roof. Do this because you love yourself, and because I love you, too. Do this in memory of sweet Treg among over seven million dead worldwide. Do this to honor the nurses and other frontline medical personnel, especially ICU Hera Mrs Land Shark RN. Stay safe.

Sweet fiancé Meccalopolis and I are loving being on vacation here in our mountain aerie. It has us looking forward to retirement. I'm going to make us a vegan omelette with all the fixings.
