And there's always profit. The shekels, kale, lucre, loot. If race-based slavery (not our race) enriches us, why, clearly that system is God's will, or just the "natural order" (man-made natural order). If you finally abolish race-based slavery, there are plenty of other ways to keep the target group economically disadvantaged. Deny 'em education. Deny 'em the vote. If they begin to rise anyway, burn their homes and shoot a few.And always deny that systemic racism exists. Very, very important.

I went to HS in Indiana, and Senior Year had a "forum class," in which our history teacher picked individual students and formed a discussion group on the very topics the State of Indiana was trying to ban. I can't imagine his reaction to it.

Profit is always a factor. However, I think there are a good number of greedy people who aren’t uniquely racist. They just lack empathy all around and love money/power. Without poorer racist people they would have to cultivate some other bigotry. Frequently I see churches/religious leaders cultivating exactly that, and profiting. Organized religion is so easily corrupted, as all power structures are.

If it were as simple as people are suspicious of people different from them, the Colonies would not have had to pass laws banning interracial unions in the 1600’s. The problem isn’t that we’re naturally suspicious of eachother, it’s that when it comes to oppression people that are being screwed over bond together. Racism was created to blunt classism.

Racism is CULTIVATED to blunt classism. But fear is the source. And with fear comes all those other feelings and views, like hatred and the urge to oppress others. And, everyone fears things until they grow up some. Racism is unnatural, but it’s teased into place by taking advantage of fear.

The KKK was definitely anti-Catholic. Even when I was a kid non-WASPS were not considered truly equal to WASPS at all. My one friend's Italian Catholic family was the first to move into a nearby upper crust suburb and they wound up having a cross burned in their front yard.

Here's the author of the bill in Indiana's Senate! Baldwin's really educated, as he only went as far as high school! However "In late 2021, Baldwin was listed as an "annual member" of the far-right anti-government militia Oath Keepers in a database leak." Says he quit though!
