I went to HS in Indiana, and Senior Year had a "forum class," in which our history teacher picked individual students and formed a discussion group on the very topics the State of Indiana was trying to ban. I can't imagine his reaction to it.

Without poorer racist people they would have to cultivate some other bigotry. Frequently I see churches/religious leaders cultivating exactly that, and profiting. Organized religion is so easily corrupted, as all power structures are.
If it were as simple as people are suspicious of people different from them, the Colonies would not have had to pass laws banning interracial unions in the 1600’s. The problem isn’t that we’re naturally suspicious of eachother, it’s that when it comes to oppression people that are being screwed over bond together. Racism was created to blunt classism.
Racism is CULTIVATED to blunt classism. But fear is the source. And with fear comes all those other feelings and views, like hatred and the urge to oppress others. And, everyone fears things until they grow up some. Racism is unnatural, but it’s teased into place by taking advantage of fear.
