Long may you reign indeed, Queen.

You've brought back the memory of me as a first grader nervously carrying a Valentine's Day card of that style several blocks to the home of Stuart White, a girl in my class on whom I had a major crush. I was petrified as I approached the door. Valentine's Day cards were things that everyone handed out in class. To give one to a specific person outside of class was serious business.

Stuart's mother answered the door, and I didn't know what to do. Somehow I'd expected Stuart herself would answer, and I'd prepared myself for that, so this threw me off entirely. Her mother was like, "Can I help you?" I kind of mumbled and told her I had a Valentine's Day card for Stuart. Stuart's mother took the card, said something like, "Oh thank you, that's very nice," and closed the door.

That was the longest walk home of my life.

Oh no!

The thing is, had Stuart answered the door, you two would have started a relationship that would have lasted through college to marriage, she would have developed a serious problem gambling on the ponies and you would have had to support her addiction through a series of extra demeaning jobs. Maybe? Anyway, probably best things worked out the way they did ;-)

Ha, yes, probably. Thank you. The coda to this story is that she moved out of state shortly after this, and I never saw her again. So someone else had to deal with the gambling addiction.

"the far-Right “Christians” behind the Jesus Super Bowl ads, the ones I thought were going to be for “crisis pregnancy centers” but were just for “Jesus.” "

Beau says he got complaints about those ads from far-Right "Christians" themselves:

Does the NYT gift link work for anyone else? Also, it is wet outside, and now I am moist. Moist from my thighs to my toes. So moist that Ben Shapiro no longer believes in me. Maybe I should have worn the rainsuit bottom, not just the top. MOIST!

What's all this Valentine's Day shit? What about Ash Wednesday? You aren't going to see a lot of good, decent people walking around today with little red hearts on their foreheads.

Expand full comment

I mostly only celebrate in that I get my kids the packs of little cards for the inevitable V-day school stuff, and maybe cheap chocolate tomorrow, lol. DH & I have been like that since forever. I don't do Ash Wednesday, either. So, it's plain old Wednesday except for my kids' possible sugar intake, lol.

We know that the RNC will now be a Trump's very own slush fund but is Lara Trump supposed to say that out loud?

Expand full comment

I keep wondering if any of this stuff is ever going to give the R's pause.

I guess they're just going to line up like good little Republicans and give Trump everything he wants knowing that no other Republican candidate for any office will ever see a penny from the RNC, because that money is all Trump's personal money now, and He. Does. Not. Share.

You'd think they'd at least get mad over the money drying up. But maybe its all going to come from super pac's now anyway. Thanks John Roberts.

I"m with RS on the return of John Stewart. His going "both sides" was so disappointing. And harmful. Ratings over reality.

I watched half of his opening before noping out. One of these things is not like the other & Biden isn't f'ing senile. Maybe he'll be in 4ys, maybe he'll be sharp as a tack until he dies at 104, but either way, right now he just has enough verbal slips per speech to for a montage that looks as if he hadn't spoken fluently for the last 20 minutes or the next 20.

I prefer Noah's monologues

They even made fun of him for it on the show as part of their first sketch. And then he did it anyway?

"Trump for being old and a Nazi."

If only PAB actually was a Nazi. But you cannot ascribe a political philosophy to a person that has no philosophies. The PAB's thought process is entirely transactional, it is wholly without the smallest shred of a moral underpinning. He is a narcissistic sociopath, a pathological liar, a serial sexual predator, a racist, a xenophobe and to top it off, he is as vain as a movie star. There is no one word for what he is.

It's easier to say Nazi then Putin's useful idiot.

So the anti-abortion crowd is after testing for abnormalities during pregnancy so a woman with a non-viable fetus and hoping for a healthy baby will spend the last two months of a pregnancy preparing the baby's room, buying cute clothes, and planning their lives around having a child. Only to have a stillborn baby or one who dies in a day or two. Yes, they don't care how even more cruel that is compared to the already painful decision to have a late term abortion for what you hoped would be a successful pregnancy. This will be compounded if some problem were detected that seriously impacted the woman's health. Possibly preventing a future pregnancy not even costing the woman's life.

Of course these are the same people who want to ban birth control. With early claims that an IUD, a highly effective, very convenient (no daily pill, no need to do anything before live making) that prevented implantation of a fertilized egg was the same as an abortion and was killing a baby. But has now expanded to wanting to ban just about every form of contraception.

I doubt even 10% of women want any restriction on safe contraceptives but that rabid 10% are guiding the national message on women's reproductive rights. Mainly through the evangelical wing of the Republican Party. The only solution to this bullshit is a clear, decisive removal of the current Republican Party from any part of government. Let them scream on street corners all they want but keep them out of Congress, the White House, governorships, and courts. The only way to do this is vote them out. Don't let some minor issue you disagree with keep you from voting this fall. You have to look at the big picture instead of what I heard a few people, possibly Russian bots trying to influence low information voters, saying in 2016 that they would never vote for Clinton because she proposed only a $12 minimum wage instead of the Sanders demand of $15. When the national minimum wage was, and still is, $7.25. So now we have a Supreme Court with a 6-3 conservative majority that reversed Roe and voted against many other laws and policies that guaranteed rights. Instead of a probable 5-4 or better liberal majority. We got over that in 2020 but that memory started fading as the GOP regained control of the House. With predictable results, going even more overboard in restricting important rights while expanding things like the right to carry semiautomatic rifles in parks where kids play and people have picnics. Come on people. Keep your eyes open and your brain in gear. The southern border is nowhere near the danger to America as the Republican Party is. Send them back under the rock they crawled out from under. Starting with voting for Democrats even if they are not your ideal candidate, so they can vote on laws guaranteeing reproductive rights, voting rights, and banning partisan gerrymandering. You can't blame them if you are not voting for them.

I have one friend who delivered a stillborn that she knew in advance was not viable.

Another who lost within days of their birth, the twins she had wanted so much and spent so much time making matching baby clothes for.

No person who was not born with the body parts to birth a child should tell anyone who gets pregnant what to do about it.

Wait, is that comment by the Amazon button up above actually true? Wonkette gets a cut of what I put in my cart ... and I don't have to actually BUY anything? That seems like the kind of giant loophole that Amazon would have fixed already since some unscrupulous people would certainly take advantage of it to benefit a website they've started to grow attached to.

Umm, for a friend, yeah, that's it ... a friend.

Or I could just be bad at comprehension (oh look, SQUIRREL) and maybe don't grok it's real meaning.

I was going to link to stories of Arizona's latest proposed legislative stupidity, but I just can't. Short versions: if one major party's candidate is tossed from the ballot, the OTHER one automatically is tossed also too; and ADOT is not allowed to do anything that reduces car volume on roads or increases bike lanes or increases pedestrian traffic or creates the long-promised commuter rail between Tucson and Phoenix.

Even that was too much. Bourbon breakfast, here we come.

And there's another one by one of the MAGAzoids in the senate that will allow students to carry concealed on all College campuses in the state after they complete a single 2-hour training session. I was in the building next door to the College of Nursing back in the early 00's when a failing nursing student decided he had to punish his professors and opened fire during an exam. Killed three people. To this day, the College of Nursing requires any packs or bags carried into classrooms be clear.

I was surprised by the "training" requirement, tbh. It almost feels worse than the lack of required training for open carry anywhere else in the state--before we only had to worry about the numbskulls who think they know what they're doing, now we get them PLUS the semi-numbskulls who might not have chosen to carry a gun before but now will think they're trained up enough to be an on-call hero in every situation (the situation is that bitch econ prof gave me an F).

Happy Hump Day!! Extra thanks to Martini, whose brilliance uplifts us all.

Local news here is that Manny Gonzales, the piece of shit "Democrat" sheriff who turned out to be a PAB loving fascist was disqualified from running against sexy Senator Heinrich. Apparently he didn't get enough signatures. Ha ha! I can't believe the fucking stupid pretzels SCOTUS is going through over simple disqualification. Happens every day!! To the shittiest people!! :-)

Personal news - woke up Monday unemployed (fuck you I quit!!), got a job offer last night, meeting about another contract today to round out the income. It's starting to look like I might be able to cobble together enough of a living in order to keep affording my Chewy autoship. I've been utterly unable to focus on anything and realized it's probably because I quit tobacco 12 days ago now (!!!) and might have been smoking a lot more pot than usual. Forgiving myself because I started smoking at the ripe old age of 12, when I found where my sister hid her Salems, and I absolutely love to smoke. Loved. :-(

Anyway, things are looking up, and may all those anti-democratic liars get all they deserve in this world.
