We will just collectively pay more in gas to make up for the stupidious "make vehicles more inefficient" idea. What rocket scientists we have! Amazing! I'll never ever buy a less efficient vehicle.
US automakers, while evil, aren’t stupid. They know the American market is a fraction of the world market, and it’s getting smaller. They won’t give up their EV lines which may still be competitive in Europe and elsewhere. So while this may slow the train, it won’t stop it.
Or I’m wrong, and we’re already a shithole country. 🤷
OT: I would always tell my kid "ABC" ("always be charging," with respect to eletronic devices).
Somehow the message didn't penetrate, so I decided I needed a simpler and more memorable slogan and devised . . . wait for it . . . "NBNC" ("never be not charging").
Bafflingly, this one has not caught on either. I just can't understand it.
I used to drive a '60s Impala convertible, that had a massive speaker system taking up the entire rear seat. It was missing a good portion of the floorboards in the front, and the brakes were very problematic. Her name was Morticia.
I currently drive a Hyundai Venue which reliably delivers 40+ mpg and is fun to drive. American car makers could do that if they wanted, but their attitudes are similar to the Hyundai salesman I talked to when car shopping. He tried to put me in an Elantra, didn't even mention the Venue. I only learned about that model when I bumped into it on the lot and thought "Hmm, that looks like what I want." Hyundai doesn't even advertise it, but there are a lot of them around here.
My youngest drives a Hyundai Sonata hybrid. The best part of it is that it keeps getting recalled for various parts of the electrical system and they keep extending the warranty for free in response. Which is good, because during two of those recalls, the car had already had the failure and was unresponsive for a few weeks.
📺 HAPPENING NOW: The Senate will vote on Republicans' latest attempt to sneak a voter ID requirement through the chamber by attaching it to a congressional stock-trading ban.
The last-ditch effort comes just as the Senate packs up for the campaign trail.
This is the best argument I've seen on renewables and though it's long, it's worth every minute. Especially don't skip his rant in the last half hour. It's golden. As commenters noted, "Alternative title: Technology Connections talks about solar and then goes nuclear." Also, "Came for the capacity, stayed for the resistance." :D
I doubt American car companies will do this. They aren't going to spend millions to go back. They just have to wait this asshole out so they will drag their feet.
When that movie came out (the remake in the late 80s) the town I now live in advertised it as "Village of the Danged" b/c the LDS church was a-pearl-clutchin'!
Christa Pike tortured and murdered a classmate in 1995. She had been set to die on Wednesday, the first woman executed in the state in 200 years.
A federal court on Wednesday ordered a pause on the execution of Christa Pike, convicted of the murder of a classmate in 1995, just hours before she was set to die by lethal injection in Nashville.
Ms. Pike, 50, would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. But her lawyers mounted a fierce last-ditch campaign to stop the execution, arguing that her defense at her initial trial had failed to consider her history of child sexual abuse and neglect.
The ruling came after the Supreme Court on Tuesday had declined to intervene in the execution. Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, also denied a request to allow Ms. Pike to serve out the remainder of her life in prison...
The execution had been scheduled for 10 a.m. in Nashville. But on Wednesday, a divided panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit said the pause was necessary to consider the new arguments from Ms. Pike’s legal team and the state’s response.
“The interests of justice and the finality of Pike’s impending execution compel the entry of a short stay of execution in order to properly analyze the parties’ fully briefed arguments,” Judge Jane B. Stranch wrote, joined by Judge Karen Moore.
I don't have a car right now, and am in no hurry to get one. But when I finally have to get wheels, I'm looking at the Subaru Outback or Forester hybrid. But if a secretly rich relative croaks and leaves me their fortune, the trashy, Joe Dirt side of me is also buying a fully restored 70s Trans Am. I'm complicated.
My first car was a Subaru FF1. It was a piece of shit, cobbled together like TinkerToys. They've really come a long way since then, but I still can't help but be leery because of how insanely crappy that tin can was. It had originally been blue, but the previous owners painted it yellow, and I found out why. The one thing it was good at though, was driving through snow drifts that stopped bigger, heavier cars, because front wheel drive.
Buddy of mine had a beautiful red 1974 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. He was driving down Murfreesboro Road from Franklin (it is called Franklin road in Murfreesboro) to get to MTSU. 2 lane highway. There was a semi three cars up, so he floors it and goes for the pass.
I guess the car two cars up didn't look back when they went for the pass. He wrapped that gorgeous beast around a telephone pole.
My dad's side of the family always had 70s Camaros and Firebirds. I think that's why I love them. My aunt had a red Trans Am, complete with a black screaming chicken on the hood. That thing was always garage kept, even if the new cars had to be parked outside. She sold it to my cousin in the 90s and he had it totaled within months.
I wanted one of those but had always bought Toyotas and didn't feel like engaging in the amount of research I thought would be necessary to make the switch, so I went with a Toyoyta Rav4 Adventure model (which I named "Vinny" and my partner hates that name, LOL!).
I've ridden in those and I like them. I would like a smallish SUV, and though I've never owned one, I've always heard you can't really go wrong with a Toyota.
I love it. There's a bump in the road (just a regular damned residential road and they won't fix it for some reason) that everyone else has to slow the Hell down for, even those big lifted MAGA trucks.
I can just breeze right over it with no problems, LOL!!!!!
I love that thing.
And if the shit hits the fan we can offroad it and disappear into the national forests around here.
ETA: OK, my only gripe is the AC was sufficient when we were living in NoCal but here in the Phoenix area and regular 114 degree days in the summer the AC doesn't blow hard enough. It kind of sucks. It takes *forever* to feel like you're cooling down.
We bought a 2020 red Bitchin' Corolla XSE a year or so ago, and it's fine at ~42mpg.
We got it before dealer's used prices went nuts and lucked out on this one.
I put a Comma.ai device in it (took all of 10 minutes) and now it'll guide and stop itself.
You can't push a button and have it drive you home, but it does a good job of lane centering
and not running into the cars in front of you. It's terrific for someone with my slightly wonky eyes.
Works so well, and integrated into the existing systems, it's like the car was made for it.
A tech thing that actually just works, doesn't need the internet, and no monthly subscriptions.
I'm old so it's probably my last car and I'm fine with that. We call it MoonyBot.
We will just collectively pay more in gas to make up for the stupidious "make vehicles more inefficient" idea. What rocket scientists we have! Amazing! I'll never ever buy a less efficient vehicle.
I think the word you’re looking for is “Schmittier”.
None of these goobers have ever turned a wrench. Trump has never even driven a car. It’s noise.
But they consider us "the elites."
LMMFAO!
Of course, because WE CAN WIPE OUR OWN ASSES.
XD XD XD XD

Kids and "My phone is on 3%". It drives me crazy. I freak out if my phone gets down to 40%.
I never go more than 3-4 days before discovering I've left my cellphone somewhere new and its battery is dead.
Hey Doc, how 'bout an old timey photo of Vlad the Impala?

Ooh yeah, I LOVE Alec! He has GREAT content!
It's all about current affairs!

If Trump were a horror title he would be “Village of the Damned Idiot”
If the GOP was a movie, it would be called "The Human Centipede".

I prefer the Simpsons remake aka "We Know ALL YOUR SECRETS!"

from an Outback driver, the new one is FUGLY.
The Crosstreks are cute.

Cousin name of Wilburn? :) Same story, I think it was 1989 that he wrecked it... :)

We have a Forester and a Crosstrek. Both hybrids. So far, great cars.
Cars suck.
trucks are for hayseeds. :)
