Don’t be so sure. My experience (of which there has been entirely too much) around gun nuts on the right, is they get off on the idea of being armed because they feel it gives them power. You step to them on a level playing field (i.e. with a gun of your own, or at least with a demonstrable knowledge of firearms), they tend to show their true colors, and slink off to piddle themselves in a corner.
Their whole worldview is that guns are good, having guns is smart, liberals are anti-gun... therefore liberals are bad with guns and dumb. Their worst nightmare manifest is a liberal who can shoot, because it doesn’t just carry an implied threat of violence (like they rely on with us); it turns their entire universe on its head. Nothing makes sense for them anymore.
Not saying we need to start open-carrying at rallies or anything. Just opining that I disagree with the idea that an unarmed left-wing presence is the only thing keeping mass-violence from breaking out.
