There were houses in which the kids weren't allowed to watch The Simpsons? I just find that really difficult to imagine. When my sister's boys were little, she practically mandated that they watch reruns of the show every day after school. (They didn't need much coaxing though.) Now as adults the three of them can at any moment act out entire episodes entirely from memory. They can also do the same for every episode of Futurama. I always regarded The Simpsons as being one of those shows that the whole family watched.

My nephews are all in their thirties now -- they began watching The Simpsons practically from the moment it was spun off into its own show. Yeah, they were those kids in school (the ones with the skateboards, the cherry bombs, the racy comic books, etc.) and their mother was the "coolest mom" in the neighborhood.

Not for nothing, the question of participating in government-run prayers and pledges -- including standing -- was settled by the Supreme Court in 1943. In wing-nut world, that is 100 years in the future. And always will be.

I'd make with the snark about the lesbian getting "cured" by her family, except it probably involved rape.

Mama Duggar must think it should be called "In Labor Day."

"An impressive variety of uniforms was worn by the officers and men of the Union and Confederate armies and navies at the start of the war. State militias had their own, and were not issued with regular army uniforms until it became apparent that confusion on the battlefield resulted from ... the fact that opposing forces were sometimes clothed in exactly the same fabrics." ~Homefront & Battlefield: Quilts & Context in the Civil War, Madelyn Shaw, Lynne Zacek Bassett, American Textile History Museum, 2012.

The obvious answer is to issue those nice militia members with Border Patrol insignia.

And while we're at it, we can issue the immigrants with Border Patrol insignia, and maybe some of those extra guns we have lying around. That should make it all much more exciting, especially in grouse season.

So the Big Labor bosses at Branch 47 of the International Amalgamated Brotherhood of Snark Producers have extracted a Labor Day holiday from the hard-working job creators at WonketteCo®™ (a Cayman Islands corporation). Typical.

Plus in all the rest of the world, May 1 is Labor Day. Here's another labor incident that for some reason is routinely left out of most history textbooks.

And all you white southerners who hate unions so much should enjoy the holiday (and sick leave and paid vacation and safe workplaces) your union brothers got their heads bashed to secure for you.

If you have today off, thank a union member.

If you don't know any union members, thank a Republican.
