I do love hiking a beautiful trail out in nature. My wife was a little geeky and nerdy in her younger years, as was I. I usually felt self-aware and uncomfortable in my own skin. I think she was better at being herself and not worrying as much about being accepted. But we clicked very quickly when we met and share a love of nature and the outdoors. I think Yellowstone National Park was my favorite place to hike, along with Acadia in Maine.

For those who aren’t into hiking, but enjoy biking more, I highly recommend e-bikes. They have come way down in price in recent years, like flat screen tvs, due to the enormous number of companies and options now. When I first explored getting an ebike 8-10 years ago, they were a few thousand dollars. Now a very nice ebike can be bought for around $700-800. Still very expensive, I know. Jasion is the brand we are familiar with.

My wife bought she and I twin bikes when they had a deal for 2 of them a couple years ago. A year later I bought a slightly larger one with more powerful motor. But the basic ones that usually go up to about 19 mph are fantastic. Hitting a trail or quiet rural backroads on my e-bike is heaven for me. If my geeky wife comes along it’s even better. :)

From what I’ve read and learned my impression is that Brian Wilson was an emotionally vulnerable person who shied away from performing and from the spotlight and who was victimized by an unethical healthcare provider who wanted control over Wilson. No doubt Wilson, like many of us, needed mental health support during his life, but not from someone who would cross many boundaries and basically inject himself into a patient’s life by trying to become some kind of manager/live-in guru who had ambitions other than treating a patient.

But Wilson gave the world some incredible music, and a beautiful high tenor and falsetto voice. If I had to pick a favorite beautiful song, “God Only Knows” is usually my answer. “If” by Bread is a very close second. David Gates of Bread is one of my very favorite musicians. He wrote, played guitar and piano and sang lead vocals on nearly all of Bread’s songs, and so his solo performances were amazing. There’s a YouTube video of him performing “If” live in 1975 that’s amazing.

"all of the songs on Sweet Insanity were written or co-written by Eugene Landy, the rather controversial psychologist who treated Wilson during two of his breakdowns."

`

I remember reading Brian Wilson's own description of this.

Brian Wilson had not left his room in months?, years?, and Landy told him that getting out in the world was a necessary step to getting better.

Brian panicked and said, "I can't mingle! I don't know how to mingle! I don't know how to talk to people!"

Landy said, "Fine. We'll do baby steps. You don't have to mingle. Just stay in the background."

Brian responded, "Oh, yeah, like nobody's gonna notice the 300-pound smelly person!"

Strangely enough, it's my partner's birthday today and he's gotten REALLY, REALLY into birds lately(I'm convinced there's a human genome that activates in our 40's to get us interested in birds, but that's off topic and my intellectual property, lol). So we went for... well, not a hike, but a nice walk along our branch of the Patapsco River, which is sorta like a hike.

No murders though, we've been off and mostly on with each other the past 21 years. Tomorrow we're doing an intro to archery lesson(as my belated from December birthday thing).

Be safe, all, and enjoy your weekend!

Hike....hm...tottered the three blocks to the nearest postbox (my postal carrier has ignored the two bills I am trying to pay for two days now) and didn't my back and leg hurt, oh my not at all, less than a block in. I'm told that repeating this experience will make it easier, but is not pain the way your body tells you "hey, knock it off, ya tryin to kill me here?"

I have to disagree with this post. Hiking is great; however, you need to go hiking with a dog rather than a geek. Dogs have several advantages:

1. When you hike with a dog, people will say, "Oh, what a cute dog! May I pet him?" No one will say this about your geek.

2. A dog will point out all the interesting wildlife: squirrels, birds, deer, etc., but, on seeing, say, a pure white squirrel, will not lecture you that "actually, that's merely a leucistic grey squirrel and not a true albino; you can tell because the irises are still pigmented" unlike a biology geek.

3. Bears are less likely to mess with you if you're with a dog rather than a geek. I've encountered black bears three times while hiking and each time, upon seeing the dog, the bears turned and wandered off. I'll admit I haven't tried this yet with a geek, but I doubt it would be as successful.

Dogs do have one disadvantage, though:

1. You have to clean up their poop; geeks will, I presume, handle this themselves.

Bring both! I do enjoy any walks, hikes, or outings of any kind with my dog, though. Lucky for me there are several dog-friendly restaurants near me, and they are right up the trail I now live by and we can walk there! Its a fake trail, because it's paved, but still better than driving and parking.

I was on the phone one Friday night with a friend. We'd decided to go out and see Moonstruck, and he had the paper laid out on the floor in front of him, open to the movie page to get the theater and times. Suddenly, he made this oops sound.

The new puppy, he explained, walked up and peed on the paper. He couldn't yell at him, because they were busy paper-training him.

Luckily, he missed the Moonstruck listing.

Your friend, kind of sounds weak sauce , good for you for going to Moonstruck without him!

The weirdest thing I can share about Brian Wilson (among so many, as you note) is Brian Wilson singing a cover of the BNL song "Brian Wilson." Sadly, Sam the Record Man is no longer on Yonge as the "late night record shop" that Steven was driving to, but Record Archive is STILL the place to go in Rochester!

Just one of the reasons I can't quit here. Finding things like this.

Thanks for that <3

Trixie is an adorable doggo. In my life I have lived with 11 dogs. 7 of those dogs were poodles. In case you are curious the others were a terrier, a mutt, a doberman and a bichon. I love doggos and kittehs and yes, they can live together. We had 4 dogs and 3 cats at one time. Lots of love in the house.

We had a standard poodle, Roxy, for over 15 years.

Since her, we have had little, (sweet but dumb) terrier rescues.

The other night, Mr. Demme said, "Please can we get a smart dog next time? All three of these guys together aren't as smart as Roxy was."

My wife's BFF, Lisa, accompanied another friend to a dog rescue in Amish country. Lisa said she'd never have a dog, but there was a standard poodle bitch there who was probably five years old and had been bred as many times as possible since she first went into heat. She had worn-down teeth from eating gravel and losing calcium from being bred so many times. The Amish puppy mill owners also cut her vocal cords so she couldn't bark. That poor abused animal looked at Lisa, walked over to her, and started leaning against her. That was it - Lisa, who never wanted a dog, took her home. She thrived under Lisa's care and was such amazingly calm, smart dog. I always got the feeling that if she wanted to she could have beaten me at chess.

The Portuguese traditionally use tile in kitchens - cool, easy to clean - and kitchen tile murals often included the household cat. Here's a reproduction of a 17thC mural which includes the family cat stealing a fish:

Daniel O'Riordan's avatar

Stealing? That's rather judgmental. That fish is in the cat's kitchen, right? Those fish were prepared in the cat's kitchen by the cat's humans, right?

If that isn't possession, I don't know what is.

If I'm not mistaken that's from the amazing kitchen at the Fronteira Palace in Lisbon, a place covered almost entirely in azulejo tiles. SO many cat depictions there.
