I don't deny there'll be a scramble for who gets to be leader -- I mean, they have giant primaries every four years, after all -- it's just that I doubt the party will dissolve into feuding factions and crumble from internal dissent. I think they'll continue to do what authoritarians do, coalesce around whoever they decide is the Manliest Man among them. And it will be a man.
Holy shit. This is beyond bonkers. We don’t agree on much with Liz Cheney, but when liberals are coming to her defense and applauding her courage, things are getting, well, weird. “I’ve always liked Liz Cheney but she’s made a determination that the Republican Party can’t grow with President Trump. I’ve determined we can’t grow without him.” That is pure insanity. Trump is an aging (rapidly, if you saw the picture of him winning that tin bowl from the Florida governor) who is obviously dragging the entire GOP down with him as the most extreme fringes of the far-right are becoming main-stream conservatives. Trump is banned from Twitter and Facebook. He’s hobbled badly after his humiliating loss and then pathetic and criminal insurrection. He will forever be a footnote in history, and a cautionary tale. I don’t believe Trump has 1/10th the power or support to rebuild his “brand” and run again. I had counted on our institutions to prevent Trump from winning in 16 and taking power. I was wrong. But I can’t see it happening again after what he did. The scary thing is that most of the Republican Senate WANTS him back? HE is the future of the party? When will this madness end? They would destroy a very powerful, capable politician in Liz Cheney for simply telling the fucking truth, and not an inconvenient truth, but an obvious one. The Big Lie can’t possibly be the loyalty oath these monsters are administering, but it is. Insanity.
