2. After they've gone far stupider than even we could predict, how long will it take the collective American consciousness to realize, "Oh fuck! We did it again!" and do something about it?
so, step 1 - scream about how you're a super power
step 2 - tie your name to someone who is reputable and has brand recognition (monroe doctrine)
step 3 - fuck around
step 4 - find out
oh and by the way, torching all the soft influence you had with the rest of the world? means that when the markets close to you and people turn you away, you've got nothing - have fun building that back up
The EU is the U.S.' biggest creditor. If they even stopped investing altogether, the economy would go into a tailspin. If they cashed in all their holdings, this country would be toast. But I'm sure Rump doesn't even know that. Do his handlers care? Doesn't look like it, at this point.
I'd hope that they'd quietly tell Rump's handlers that they're prepared to pull it, and mean it. But if they just did it as soon as Donny Demento starts in on Greenland again, I'd be OK with that, too.

Insatiable greed for money and power. This is the oligarch way, grasshopper. I can't help but notice nobody ever makes any mention about what the people of these countries think or want. I feel like they're ignoring them at their own peril because occupying them is going to become very expensive and if you're not occupying them and instead just taking all their resources they're going to rise up. There is no outcome on any of this that is good. Eventually they'll have to bring back the draft so America's kids can stand around shooting Venezuelans, Greenlanders, Cubans, etc. and being shot back at. Mostly with guns acquired from the United States of Gun.
The whole US military mindset is completely incapable of dealing with an insurgency. They need clearly-identified targets that they can knock down with overwhelming force.
Offer Denmark and Greenland a deal: the citizens of Greenland get a monthly stipend for 20 years, Denmark gets a cut of mining revenues. Greenland's voters vote on it.
Of course, anything you steal tastes much sweeter to these sociopaths.
We're assholes. Assholes don't do things in half-measures. Whatever agreement the voters accepted, in a year the place would be overrun with gun culture, incels, and Fox News.
They'd pay as much attention to Greenlanders yelling, "We didn't vote for this," as they do to Americans.

Not cynical, just realistic, based on events of the last four decades.
I'd like a monthly fucking stipend for a change. The stipend won't even pay for the medical care Greenlanders already receive.
Some Greenlanders receive. Many, many parts of Greenland are so remote that medical care might be hours and hours away.
