The state of Arizona demands that a one-armed diabetic whose insulin is cripplingly expensive take complete personal responsibility for managing his unendurable pain through legal means (which it makes impossible) while caring for his young son.

Then the son dies while in state custody, and suddenly it's, responsibility? No one's responsible. Certainly no one working for the state of Arizona. These things happen.

Personal responsibility is very much a relative thing.

I hope this guy gets a barracuda of a lawyer who will make a lot of bureaucrats' lives miserable before delivering a big fat settlement check to his client. It won't make up for the loss of his son or any of his other misery and heartbreak, but it's the best that our wonderful system can do.

This is so so so horrifying. I don't know if non-medical people can fully grasp how **completely** obvious it is that someone is going into DKA. This is not a sudden event, like a heart attack. It takes hours, days even!!! And it is 100% obvious to anyone who isn't a complete sociopath that the person in question needs to get to a hospital ASAP

Those kids were not white enough and/or rich enough for the AZ govt to care about. Now if they were the "pre-born" you can bet the state would have done everything to protect them.

In states where weed is legal many Federal employees are required to take opiates for pain management to save them from the demon weed.

Alas.

Except he can't afford a lawyer. It's almost as if these are systems that intentionally don't serve the public well

Personal injury lawyers get paid on a contingency basis-they get a percentage of the settlement if they win, nothing if they lose. That’s why frivolous lawsuits by non-rich people are almost nonexistent-because no lawyer will take the case unless they think they can get something.

If he had 300 pounds to lose, his weight was a health risk, not just an aesthetic issue. That kind of morbid obesity is very strongly linked with heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and all sorts of other problems. Sometimes risky, invasive surgery is the best option. The problem is what happened afterwards.
