That's not what Feynman wrote in his book. He wrote someone slipped him information that someone at "the highest levels" inside the White House ordered NASA to overrule the engineers.

Who was "running" the White House at the time? Nancy Reagan or George H. W. Bush?

Narrows it down a bit...

Reagan only had nothing to do with it only in the sense he was so senile at the time, he thought an actor in a movie was a real soldier and the fictional movie was "real"...

Yeah, I'd be pretty willing to forgive a brain fart (just yesterday I completely forgot the name of Gregory Peck, and had to say "oh, you know, Atticus Finch") except that this looks like more than that. He had clearly planned to speak about it, and wasn't just rambling off the cuff.

The Bush and Walker families had some bizarre intertwinings in love and bidness. The Bushes acquired Walker's Point in a hostile takeover upon the death of the elder Walker, wresting it away from the poor Walker heirs. Make a great saga on PBS some day.
