I'm investigating their janky-ass feature flagging thing which they got off github and hacked. It uses redis as its key-value backend. Nothing really wrong with that.
I'm trying to work out how many "dead" keys there are in there. So I run something in the live production redis terminal.
Redis single threads. There's a reason for this. I'd forgotten and ran something naive.
Redis blocks. It's shut down. We had screens up showing "site status" - I glance over just in time to see everything go red. The entire site is down. Cue panic. The Chief Product Officer comes running out and yells "WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON? [FUKUI] WHAT IS IT?"
My reply "I know what it is. Working on it."
Now I've elided the bit where I caused it there. Then I do Alec Guinness.
Fixed it in five minutes (reboot of redis; it has a disk cache). Shit though, that was something.
