Reflecting on this drivel (Watters, not Robyn) I thought of several couples I know - long term happy ones btw - comprised of a woman with a BA, BS or higher in a white collar job, and a man in a labor job, be it construction, infrastructure work, facility maintenance or whatever. Also a couple chefs in there.
Women striving for, and gaining, economic and social (as well as political) equality is hardly new. Primatologists like de Waal have studied our close cousins for years and clearly note that while there may be differences in roles between males and females (chimps and bonobos) those roles have a strong degree of parity within the troop. Hunter-gatherers (preferably gatherer-hunters) were supplied with food mostly by women (80%/20% some anthropologists estimate). We've noted here ancient burials of women with tools for fighting and hunting, the same as male burials. In ancestral, pre- and early human history we see a strong degree of equality. The rise of male-dominated religions (in the West, primarily Pauline-dominated Christianity) and industrial capitalism have pushed things sideways. Now we see a restorative action occurring in advanced societies, some of which are well ahead of the US. The reaction of those such as Incels and their like is a losing battle. Simplistic analysis? Yeah. But it's where I stand.
Woah Jesse. Wednesday evening a friend invited me to an evangelical recovery church she sponsors. I went to support her. I analyzed the approach the evangelical ministers used in their communications during the program. What they do is speak consistently about the way things are, with authority, without any truth or facts. When I read what Jesse Watters said in this post I see Jesse communicates the exact same way, projecting authority, as if what he says is true. But like recovering addicts sitting in this recovery church there are far too many people suffering, and it’s easy to get new followers, especially with addicts if you offer a quick fix. Perhaps it’s just another addiction.
An extra irony, an actual problem I have seen discussed is that when women become the majority or plurality of degree holders in a field, men start to avoid it and pay and job opportunities decline correspondingly. Which means the "lonely" men won't even consider a job where there are 3 or more women for every 2 men as a chance to get lucky.
You know, Megan McArdle proposed this “failing upward” life model. Lose your job offer, live with your parents in Manhattan next to the WTC, start a blog after 9/11, when blogs were new, get noticed by the NYT, get a job as a columnist, write books telling everyone else how they should do what you did at high priced seminars that pay handsome honoraria. And the band played on.
Betty Friedan inveighed against the sexism of “Why is she getting a degree in literature from Smith when she is just going to be a housewife”? That was back in First Wave Feminism. Whelp, Jesse Waters, maybe the little missy will write a book, like Shirley Jackson (who supported Stanley Hyman’s cheating Bennington professor’s ass) or JK Rowling. Maybe the little missy will start a business and be an entrepreneur, like the Wall Street Journal (The Daily Diary of the American Dream) advocates. All the guys who don’t have college degrees are starting businesses too. Maybe the little Missy will flip houses for a bundle, cause she knows manly trades like plumbing or electrical wiring. Ever think of that, Jesse? Maybe she’ll become a long haul trucker and listen to country music and AM Talk Radio. Hmm Jesse? Can you operate a manual transmission, you big strong macho man? Maybe she will open a dojo and teach self-defense. Remember Carly Fiorino, with her advanced degree in Medieval History? She became CEO of Hewlett Packard and then ran for President. And, you might remember this guy from San Matteo Junior College, who bested Donald Trump at real estate and made a fortune with Wheel of Fortune, creating jobs for Pat Sayjak and Vanna White (high skilled jobs, too), by the name of Merv Griffin? And then there was a guy who was mostly self educated, who ran a store that went bankrupt, who read lawbooks and passed the Illinois bar and sent his son to Harvard and ran for president and won, name of Lincoln? Lincoln believed in upward mobility, and equal rights for women and education for women. Lincoln would have told a funny story about a funny guy who got hornswoggled by a smart woman in a horse trade, a guy name of Jesse Watters.
