Well, the "War Dept-and-its-rich-Contractors" part of the government, anyways.

i had this very conversation yesterday with a darling hipster canvassing my neighborhood to end gov't support for junk food (i thought he was an actor and invited him in). i reminded him that barry may not be all that and a bag of chips for the left, but we sure as hell need him right where he is right now when thinking about scotus.

he agreed and i signed his petition and all was well in libtard neighborhood of chicago.

Yeah, well, Mick Jagger votes Tory. Due to being richer than fuck, I suppose, or else just an asshole over 30.

Hey, I know German. That is not the correct translation. What Carter actually said is, "Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you."

Reports that he banged his shoe on the podium, however, are inaccurate. He was just tapping his water glass with his teaspoon.

At least it makes sense for Mick to vote Tory. It makes sense for the rich and near-rich to vote Republican. It's the other 40% I don't understand.

Yeah, I sure wish he (and quite a few other ostensible liberals / moderates) would just have no-commented, or confined themselves to something like "I wasn't on the jury, so I will not express an opinion about the verdict, but those Stand Yer Ground laws are certainly a <strike>piece of shit</strike> bad idea".

Even if somebody believes that the jury's decision was legalistically correct, the overall outcome is such a glaring injustice that it is irresponsible to give it any kind of positive reinforcement. Jimmy disappointed me on that one.

Many years go, when I had reflexes and free time because single, I used to play Quake with a guy who used Phaedra as his nick. Claimed at one point to have completed his TD collection - quite a feat!<br /><br /><br />The four albums from Phaedra through Stratosfear are definitely my favorite.

Saying the US doesn't currently have a functioning democracy says nothing about either when or how this situation came to be.

My German was probably never good enough to read the original and it's certainly not now as good as it was 20 years ago when I last studied it, but what I remember does suggest that the Google translation of the later part of <em>Der Spiegel</em>'s piece is accurate enough when it mentions his lamentation of the partisan divide, the excessive influence of money, and the confusion of election rules in American politics. It didn't go into any further detail about that last point, but I'm personally willing to give Jimmy the benefit of the doubt that he was thinking about the mess of differing state laws and the SCOTUS' evisceration of the VRA enabling the GOP to gerrymander the hell out of the House and straight-up prevent mostly Democrats from voting using ID laws.

So go easy on the old guy, please ;)

The suppression and overt intimidation doesn't have to be current. The belief in the possibility of future suppression and intimidation can have a chilling effect, a phrase you'll see a lot in SCOTUS opinions.

Of course, it does pale into comparison to the much more direct distortions of democracy, from the gerrymander through unlimited dark money to voter ID laws. And I didn't even mention my pet peeve yet, the undemocratic outcomes of the first-past-the-post method of counting votes (although that's closely tied to the gerrymander).

I think I might've headlined that story "Crazy Person Found On Boat". Probably why I'm not a headline writer.

HA HA. I remember* Repubicans complaining about his deficit spending. Then Reagan took office and deficits were OK. Until Clinton. Then they were OK again under Dubya. Now they're terrible. Every eight years or so the efficacy of deficits flip-flops like a slinky on a stairway from heaven. ____________________________ * read about it in history books because I'm too young to remember anything like that
