I'm glad free speech won out this time, but we should be talking more about how much this is also partially a result of consolidation in media. This is what, the third time a media company has caved (at least initially) to Trump because of a merger? Are all media platforms going to be owned by the MAGA Ellison assholes in the next couple of years?

Trump and his minions wouldn't have as much power over media if there weren't so few of them and they weren't trying to merge into even fewer ones. It's bad for consumers and it's bad for our rights under the First Amendment.

Pointed out by The New Republic:

“If you want to stop political violence, stop telling your supporters that everybody who disagrees with you is a Nazi,” Vice President JD Vance, who reportedly once wondered whether Trump was “America’s Hitler,” said yesterday.

I JUST said to someone downthread that hyperbolic statements like that are only proof of their disingenuousness

Plus literally zero people should believe anything from the man who said "I'll tell stories like Haitian immigrants are eating cats and dogs to get the media to pay attention to me"

The man has a diseased mind

THEY HAVE DEMONSTRATED REPEATEDLY THAT THEY ARE DISSEMBLING LIARS WILLING TO RESORT TO VIOLENCE TO GET WHAT THEY WANT.

Disbelieve that at your own risk

For the longest time, we kept Netflix, Hulu, and Prime going year round, and everything else we'd sub when our shows were back, and cancel when we've had our fill a month or two later. A month of HBO, a quarter of Paramount+, six weeks of Starz. That's part of how this is cheaper than cable, we have control of our spending dollars. We only pay for what we want to watch, when we want to watch it. But now I feel like it's all optional. That's going to take awhile because Hubs is less of an activist than I am.

They weren't fixing, They did. I saw the ads online. It was dumb as fuck, but they actually did release the ads (at least temporarily)

I’m already with you Marcie on the rolling cancellations. We only carry one streaming service year round and cycle through the others at will for a month or two every year to binge other stuff.

I’m not going to spend over $100 a year to watch just a few shows I like WITH ADS. Now they get $10 or $20 a year from me instead because they had to be too greedy.

The mergers are even scarier than the censorship. Why are these mergers allowed to happen? They are literally spending money that could be invested in producing more and better products on forming monopolies, also known as market manipulation. This should not be possible. Investors should be rejecting this bad investment, workers should go on strike, and government should ban any merger for companies that have over 1% of market share.

That's what I just commented! We should be talking more about how this consolidation of media is bad both for consumers and our rights under the first Amendment.

Monopolies tend to favor investors. But yeah, we used to enforce antitrust laws, but modern Republicans are completely in favor of a handful of people owning and controlling everything.

My point was that any good investor would want their investment to improve the business they are investing in, not just line their pockets. Filling your pockets without producing more or better goods should not be called investment, that's just a scam. Just because it is legal doesn't make it not a scam.

Well, I guess there are clearly two definitions of “good investor” … yours, which denotes some kind of integrity and interest in future benefits.

I was going with the prevailing and most ubiquitous kind of “good investor” who is happy to make money hand over fist in the short term, but also destroy everything worthwhile in the process. ;)

The investor class who own 87% of the stock market already favors the later definition.

Yeah, those kinds of "good" investors are scum, they're neither good nor investors (as in: They do not invest, they gamble and parasitise).

cancel every service every month is a great idea.

I had so much fun watching my wife cancel Hulu and put in the Other reason box: Censorship

She's a keeper. (32 years lol)

Anyway, fuck steaming, they mostly suck. Although OMG Slow Horses was amazing.

Any other awesome shows we should watch? I've almost completely stopped watching TV, we go weeks now without turning it on.

(because sometimes there is no F1 for weeks. I am am the biggest hypocrite ever guys, FYI)

I really liked Murderbot on Apple TV+. It's actually funny and light-hearted, despite the name, and the episodes are only a half hour each. It's sci-fi in that there are robots and it's set in the future, but it's mostly about free will and what it means to be a good person.

It also doesn't hurt that it stars my future husband Alexander Skarsgård (he doesn't know it yet).

If you're into scifi, then The Expanse is great. As is Farscape (a story about loneliness - guy gets lost in outer space, accidentally becomes fugitive from space nazis), and Babylon 5 (diplomatic space station where people try to figure out what it means to be a good person).

If you're into medieval comedy musicals, then Galavant is hilarious.

If you want to watch a classic ADHD comedy, then Bringing Up Baby is a treat. That's a movie though, not a series.

“Will fear of midterms and a woke planet make any Republicans in Congress start to push back on the MAGA agenda?”

I’m gonna say, “no.” MAGA Queen Lindsay Graham just said he’d support a Trump third term in ‘28 because he “hopes this ever ends.” Kinda sorta sounds like the “thousand year reich” stuff to me. Graham is nothing if not a preening coward and follower. He spoke his mind briefly in 2015 when he said the GOP would lose Bigly if they nominate Trump and they would deserve it. But then Trump improbably won, causing Graham to sniff the Royal grundle and beg Dear Leader for a place at the table of grift. So of course he wants this era to never end. It’s high times for the sycophant opportunists who found a soulless man addicted to flattery to do their bidding, while encouraging them to accept bribes, kickbacks and all the riches that come from fossil fuel companies, corporations and the NRA in the corrupt pay-to-play era. As long as Trump is around, it’s a shitty conservative free-for-all, without having to do anything to help Americans except reduce taxes on the wealthy who pay the kickbacks via PACs and campaign slush funds. Power breeds corruption, and wealthy people and politicians are greasing each other up good while America is distracted by all the other horror.

It's so emblematic of our world the projection of Trump going after anyone on broadcast media who says something bad about him as ILLEGAL campaign contributions when there's an entire right wing media echosphere that constantly props up his political efforts and allows him to run election campaigns on the cheap, while being heavy on the grifting.

Ugh, this fucking timeline

Watching Kimmel last night made me realize that maybe, just maybe, the Democrats showing genuine humanity to the other side, like he did by appreciating Erika Kirk’s forgiveness and by tearing up over Kirk’s murder, might be a way to reach across the aisle and make some on the right realize the left isn’t a bunch of monsters the way right wing media make them out to be. Sure the grifters and crazies won’t budge but you don’t need all of them to make a difference. Just few to get things going and make the crazies the minority in their own party.

Kimmel did that and got censored. I'm not entirely sure why you think doing it more will work better. You know what worked? Boycots and protests. Any way of harming the profitability of those that support fascists is a valid tactic. Being polite just means you get censored.

"I'm not watching all that"

One of the clips is less than a minute long

But

1 ) you're wrong and what there is to buttress that assertion is every bit of bigotry and demands to submit that MAGA shows every time Democrats show their collective belly and

2) thanks for letting us know how you really feel about everyone having equal representation

Your whole position on this is a textbook example of the white moderate MLK tried to warn everybody about a generation ago who'd rather have quiet and call it "peace" than actually have peace through justice

That way lies fascism -- because the fascists seem to know they can't run their program without the Vichys better than you Vichys seem to know it

... or maybe want to acknowledge it

JFC. Never said it was the only solution. Never said to cater to MAGA. I’m saying that some of the people voting for fascism aren’t really fascists. They just vote Republican out of muscle memory and might be reachable on a human level.

That’s it. There are obviously many many other solutions. I’m not at all saying to acquiesce to fascists. I’m saying to pry the nonfascists away from them by holding up a mirror.

Trux Mint In Box's avatar

Look. I get it. But not every Republican voter is MAGA is my point. Do they support MAGA? Yes. But not all of them are irredeemable. I am not center left and not trying to Ezra Klein this thing. And yes I am not a minority so I am not in the same position as say, a black woman, or an LGBTQ person, but that doesn’t make my observation less valid. I’m not even saying to go out of our way to appeal to Republicans. I’m saying that being genuinely and honestly emotional and applying sympathy even to perceived enemies can make some people realize we aren’t the evil monsters the right wing media machine has made us out to be. However I will not sacrifice a single liberal belief in the name of unity and that is because I feel we are on the side of right. That’s non negotiable.

It’s just an observation that some people can be reached with emotional appeal. Just some. Believing every single Republican is a monster is not any more helpful than them believing the same about us.
