I can think of nothing to write except: This country is insane.

Ta, Dok. Baby steps, but steps in the right direction.

Banning the AR-15 type guns would do a lot more to end gun violence.

Take what progress we can, I suppose, but our national gun disaster wouldn't be so bad is Breyer, instead of dissenting to his friend Scalia in Heller, had taken him out back and beat the crap out of him. Our courts' current interpretation of the Second Amendment is as if they looked at the First Amendment and said, "It's about holding school assemblies; everything else is irrelevant."

Seems as though many of the weapons used by mass shooters were "purchased legally". Wouldn't that indicate that it might be just a bit too easy to legally purchase a firearm? Just sayin'

I never know whether that little factoid revealed at the time of a shooting is meant to be comforting or not.

Expect a new round of right wing hysteria over BATF - it's never really gone away ( BATF is one of those federal agencies the GOP wants to defund ), but it really hasn't been in the news much lately - or at least not in the news I listen to/read. Who knows, maybe right wing media has been flogging that dead horse all along. Nothing like a little Second Amendment extremism to rally the MAGAt troops

BATF is already seriously underfunded. I read somewhere that they only have enough field agents to conduct routine inspections of licensed gun dealers once about every ten years. sounds believable.

I'm a gun owner who strongly favors registration of all firearms with strict protocols for ownership transfers of any sort. Treat them exactly like motor vehicles. I don't see that as any infringement upon my rights

Military grade weapons are also being purchased at gun shows by cutout buyers then traded to the Mexican cartels for bathtub fentanyl.

first time i bought a gun at a gun show i thought they were doing something wrong. like i can just take this after giving you money? there aren't any additional steps here? really?

Glad to see other gun owners who are shocked by the ease of purchasing firearms. it's ridiculous

Background checks are a damn fine idea, especially in light of the numbers of assholes who have no business having a gun. If broadening background checks saves lives, even incrementally, it is a a good thing. But incrementally is the problem. The proposed regulations seem like a band-aide on an arterial wound.

I live near the southern reach of the Salish Sea and every morning the local TV news floods the airwaves with stories about armed teenagers & other criminal malcontents running amok and on occasion shooting someone. Currently it's in illegal for anyone in the State under 21 to own a handgun or assault rifle, under 18 to own a regular rifle or have been convicted of a felony regardless of age. The weapons in these stupid boy's hands are largely stolen, not purchased, often from friends or family members. Background checks to nothing to prevent this. (My suggestion is to hold accountable those who intentionally or not arm these hooligans. The question never asked is where did they get the gun.)

I am one of those responsible gun owners, specifically a target shooter. I've owned a rifle or two for decades. They are kept unloaded, ammo in a different room, under lock and key. There are no children or roommates about. I once held a couple assault on loan, and while kinda fun to shoot, I would never own one; inaccurate, loud, not that pleasant to shoot, and the ammo is expensive & sometimes hard to get. I won't own a handgun b/c I do not want a weapon primarily designed to shoot another person.

Currently I am trying to acquire a .22 rifle, a Remington 34 to be exact, from a long time friend. Her father passed away about a month ago and as the Executor of his estate she wants to be rid of her Dad's modest rifle collection. The easiest and still legal solution would have been to toss it in with the other possessions in the back of the U-Haul she drove up from Arizona and hand it to me, but we being good Liberals wanted to do it the right way. She turned the rifles over to a gun broker. Turns out getting the Rem 34 entails a FFL an 18.00 application fee, a $40.00 transfer fee plus shipping the rifle local FFL gun dealer. FFL approval can take ten days. All this for a $100.00 rifle. It's a pain in my ass and a waste of everyone's time. That rifle will never be used in a crime.

All that said, I believe the process as inconvenient as it is, it's important. While my friend can vouch I'm not a homicidal maniac, the folks involved in transferring the rifle to me can't. Due diligence is always a good thing.

The reason I wrote this lengthy post is to share with the good people of Wonkette an idea as to what part of the gun trade is like.

" All it took was 25 years of massacres."

School shootings started under W because the Clinton crime bill included a ban on assault weapons, thanks to the amazing work of then-Senator Feinstein.

Instead of just shitting on Dems for being too slow, maybe acknowledge that this is a long fight and we had victories before. Why did W get close enough to the White House to steal it? Because of purity bullshit that encouraged people to "Vote Green!" Like, OMG THOSE DEMS MUST BE PUNISHED so maybe let's TAKE THE FUCKING WIN OK?
