I need to correct part of my statement - apparently, the Moderna vaccine only requires "standard" refrigeration. I thought both of the early vaccines required "super-cold" refrigeration.

I also saw some reporting that the Moderna vaccine can foster effective immunity at only a quarter of the current dose. That could mean a sydden quadrupling of available Moderna vaccine.

The places that need it most don't have health care workers. There are countries in Africa where total national spending on health per capita is barely $5.

I think Biden ought to level with the public. Fine sentiments are no help.

Shouldn’t the dumbest, most racist anti-science wingnut be in favor of this? If the vaccine is all genocide and stuff, doesn’t this mean we’re genociding poorer, browner nations? I’m assuming they’d be all for that.

Also, we won’t have to mine for metals in those countries anymore, because they’ll just leap out of the earth and attach themselves to all those vaccinated people!

This is how we restore our credibility on the world stage - being the good guys riding to the rescue.

Amateur. Trump would have figured out a way for his family to profit, then only doled out the vaccines to those who kissed his ass.

Canada, meanwhile, here, hasn't made any commitments about specific doses. Yes, some $440 million for Covax. But, still, erm, bit of an outlier among rich countries. Hoping people are getting that isn't going to fly.

Bit embarrassing. I appreciate the politics are a bit fraught up here, with people still a bit stressed about how the rollouts started. As a place that can't actually make any of the things ourselves yet, and with populations who were freaking out a few months ago about when or if anything was going to arrive, a lot of people are still a bit twitchy. But, on balance, we're now really doing ridiculously well against most of the world, and we owe that in large part to places like Europe that stuck to their commitments and alliances and shipped even when it hurt. Kinda pushes a bit toward pay it forward.

Unnamed official saying something about 'up to' 100 million doses. Good? But yeah, gonna have to do it. Overall, reality is: world population is around 7.8 billion, doses given around 2.3. And these very, very disproportionately in rich countries.

Reality is as Dok sez. I'll put in my own words: even if it doesn't somehow bother you seeing people dying en masse and frequently already fragile healthcare systems and economies apocalyptically crushed, you don't want to give this fucker anywhere to mutate. That there can wind up a nasty, nasty kind of karma, in the end.

It already has been. Unused portions sent to the US military distribution center in Germany have already vaccinated 1,900 local national civilians working on bases near the center, gratis.
