This is not a win. This is a bait-and-switch. I'll bet you a paycheck that the plan is to stop the LNG plant now, brag to all the environmental voters how wonderful Biden and the Democrats are for the environment, then sucker environmentalists out of their time, money, and votes.

After Biden is re-elected, the plant will magically pass all reviews and be opened and fired up.

If you believe that the Biden Administration and the Democrats are really serious about this, you are a damned fool.

I don't know if it's because of 'degree in rhetoric' or just because it's happy news, but policy isn't usually so easy to follow-- that was like a Simenon novel.

Did I ever tell the wonketariat about my friend from a tiny town in Tennessee (I think) whose mother's small house burst into flames? There was fracking, small earthquakes, then this house exploding while her mother chatted with the mailman in the yard. Facts were sort of cloudy and I kept asking her more and more-- till she said "the house only cost $30,000 to replace!"

These mysteries come with stories from regions we're not used to-- but the story about the fire did come up in connection with the issue of fracking-- that I do remember.

I just replaced my gas heat with heat pumps!

You won't regret it. We got our house off oil and kerosene by installing heat pumps. And this is in Maine, which is allegedly cold.

Next step is heat pump water heater and clothes dryer. We already have solar panels and an EV.

Jennifer A's avatar

Wait, please tell this poor homeowner more about heat pumps. I have a 300 year old house in NJ that - despite much renovation and new doors and new insulation- hemorrhages heat in winter. I'm on oil and my last bill, for about 3 weeks of usage, was $800. Gulp. (I have twin boys and an au pair in house, so there's lots of laundry and dishwashing and baths. Thank god I'm on well water.) Anyway--- what do heat pumps entail?

Expand full comment
Pexas Teat's avatar

From what I understand, heat pumps really do work best in well insulated houses. As you know, it's hard to retrofit old houses and reinsulate them!

There are different types of heat pumps, and they are basically air conditioners that can run backwards and be a heater in winter and AC in summer. We have "ductless" mini split air source heat pumps, but there are also ground source (require lots of pipes run in trenches around the house). Also great news whole-house heat pumps that can use ducts, if that's what your house has already.

To bring down bills, you may want to look at heat pump water heaters (as a bonus, they dehumidify!) or combo clothes washer/heat pump dryer units.

$800 for 3 weeks of heating is scary! Granted, it got pretty cold, but still.

One thing that might be in your favor is that the heat pumps are like 300-400% efficient above 30°, meaning that every Watt of electricity you use for heat provides 3-4 W of heat. I'm in Maine and use ours a lot in the shoulder seasons, and it's been warm enough the past few days (high in the mid 30s) that I shut the furnace off and have been heating only with them. In "real Maine" winter we absolutely need the wood heat also, but I suspect NJ is quite a bit warmer and heat pumps would work quite well there.

We are here in MA and yes did all the research about would we be warm enough. (it was 50 this past week, so I hear you) We also have an EV. Solar panels - I wish, we live in a condo complex and while they legally can't stop us, I have to gird my loins a bit before I can be "that" person. I am going to wait a couple more years for all the 80 year old trustees to, um, retire, before I take it on. The same ones who insist on ALL the lawn service work and don't have an email. Baby steps.

I think it's true that if we don't deliver gas to Europe, who have been buying it from Russia for decades, they are going to have a massive switch-over to oil and coal, so that should be considered in the analysis. Gas, as bad as it is, can't be directly substituted with renewables yet, but is a bridge to a time when it is no longer needed. We have to consider short term and long term effects. When it comes to stranded assets through, the fuel itself may become the biggest stranded asset in history.

Gingerwentworth's Theory's avatar

I wonder if Western Europe has lobbyists and a bunch of hangdog legislators opposing sustainable energy? They must have oil wells there? Maybe they don't!

Expand full comment
Robert Eckert's avatar

We *have* been delivering gas to Europe and continue to do so. They are replacing their gas usage with renewables, so there is no need to step up exports in that direction when we are already filling the gap that used to be Russian supplies, and the demand will only be going down in years to come.

I never will forget a hearing after the BP spill in the gulf (our gulf), (a hearing that followed findings of extreme negligence on the part of the company) when some senator who seemed to be from Hell, opened his questions of the CEO this way: "First, I just want to apologize for the things that have been said to you here today." I think he was crying! Also I think that was when the head of BP said in an enraged tone: I haven't had a day off in 6 months!"
