It would be interesting to know what year, make, and model her car is.

I would think as she lives in Philadelphia and (as far as we know) has never been stoped for tinted windows there, this is clarly a scam to make money in South Williamsport

Here is a link to a PDF below explaing the laws.

i would hope that a lot of supporters/witnesses go along while she's washing cars, but they probably do that inside the station garage and wouldn't have to let anybody else in. the kicker is that they likely have somebody who does their grunt work already

I can only speak to how it's done in the two rural counties of which I'm familiar, but the county jail inmate trustees are the ones who wash cop cars from any law enforcement agency that wants it. Even members of the public could get their cars washed, and they'd put money on the books of the inmate. Much better solution than what this asshole judge sentenced her to.

I think there's three basic kinds of cop: one is the good kind - actually explains themselves, follows rules, and is polite when dealing with the public. The second is not actually corrupt or (premeditatively) violent, but they are very arrogant and entitled, and expect the public to just DO WHAT THEY SAY, goddammit, and everything will go just fine and why can't people realize that?

The third kind is a nightmare, and is relatively uncommon. But the second kind ends up hurting people also, because their attitude ends up making problems that didn't have to exist in the first place.

Expand full comment

And then there's the "Good Cop" who doesn't report or inform against the other two kinds of "bad cop". That makes THREE kinds of Bad Cop.

Expand full comment

The first kind doesn't exist in sufficient numbers to be statistically meaningful.

The second exists in great profusion, and they're the larval stage of the third kind.

The third kind is far too common.

I spent over a decade working for a vertical integrator for public safety, and the horrors that I saw as a relatively privileged civilian ensure that I'd never see LEOs of any stripe in a positive light again. They're glorified slave patrols with immunity for their actions unless what they do is deeply egregious, and even then, we see how hard it is to convict them for bad acts.

What are all these scratch marks on the paint on the police cars?

You mean I was supposed to use water when scrubbing the dirt off?

Well this manages to hit the trifecta of belittling, insulting and gross. WTF?!

I hope she washes the squad cars by spit shining them.

Shit shining. You might not be able to polish a turd, but you might be able to polish with one.

Does she have a lawyer representing her? That shit can be appealed and there’s precedent with the dumbass judge.

Expand full comment

i agree with you, Walter, but it sounds like the appellate court already gave the trial judge the road map for how to get away with this

Maybe she ran out of money after her attorney bled her out.

That is certainly a possibility. I hope the ACLU or some other non-profit takes her case if she needs representation.

Being a card-carrying ACLU (take that MAGAts!) member, they have a case rich environment these days.

At 9pm in mid Sept in the Williamsport area it's past dusk, so not the best liglhting conditions. PA DOT has definitions for acceptable window tinting (70% transmissability). How was the cop able to spot (allegedly) illegally tinted windows in the dark?

Expand full comment

She undoubtedly bought the car with the windows the way they were at the time of the traffic stop but she was made responsible. Ain't safety enforcement great? It's just like noncompliance. You can whip it out like a throw-down saturday night special.

Expand full comment

I bought a car recently that has tinted windows. Now I'm thinking I need to avoid driving in Pennsylvania. Fortunately, I don't live close to that state.

Expand full comment

Sadly, it's in the top third of acceptable states.

I'll go with DWB as the primary offense here.

I wonder how prominently Lycoming Co. features in copies of the Green Book, as in "do not travel through there." I'm sure this kind of thing isn't new for the area.

Minor quibble: Judges are judicial branch, not executive branch. So technically not law enforcement.

She was given a reprieve 3 months ago, which is good news. The article also says the sentence was vacated, which I guess means dismissed or thrown out.

Expand full comment

That is referring to the initial sentence which Robyn mentioned in her article. The new sentence (including the required probation) still stands. Regarding the new sentence:
