My mother worked for many years as a tech in the pathology lab at the local VA hospital. Staffing in pathology, for both doctors and support staff like techs, skewed heavily foreign. Maybe the idea was that dead people, and their tissue samples, don't care about your language skills.
Anyway, a lot of those employees were far from home and didn't know many people in the area. Mom, being a warm type, would strike up friendships that included their coming over for dinner, often multiple times.
That was how I met Daisy.
The story on her was that her family had been rich and prominent in Haiti, but they had somehow gotten on the wrong side of the Duvaliers and had to flee. Daisy was one of the most cheerful, sunniest people you'd ever meet. She was funny as hell and always high-spirited. She would let me practice speaking French with her constantly, ever patient with me as I butchered the language. I once gave her a present of a book of Peanuts cartoons in French.
My point, which you've probably guessed if you got this far, is that Daisy -- and the many, many Haitian refugees* like her -- had more worth and value as human beings in one fingernail than Trump and Vance and the entire MAGA crowd have in their entire wretched bodies. Fuck every last one of them for vilifying fine people to get votes.
