And before anybody griefs me, this is what you get now when you try to use the service:

On Monday 24th August at 8PM EST, we received at letter from X Corp. asking to cease and desist the service XCancel.

The service XCancel is stopped until further notice.

We are seeking legal advice and won't share more details for now.

Thank you for the trust you have put in these two years of XCancel.

Just got done paying the second monthly cycle of bills. (I pay twice a month, resetting my credit-card account each time so there's zero chance the bastards can use some weird float concept to ding me for interest.) There was enough left over, after paying the last half of my property tax (which went down from last year! Yippee!) during the first cycle, to send another Benjamin to some charity.

I like to vary it, spreading my far-from-largesse among many. This has the perverse effect of increasing my junk-mail moneybegs, but no system is perfect. This time I chose a food bank in town -- not the one where I volunteer once in a while. I figure that since they don't get my time, they might as well get a pittance of my money.

Here's the thing, though...

Of all my regular chores, bill-paying is the one I find the most pleasant. It helps, of course, when you have enough funds to pay your bills comfortably.

But my downstairs neighbor is setting himself up for automatic bill paying for many of his regular accounts, because he doesn't want to have to worry about it if he gets laid up in the hospital. (I found out about it when he asked for help with the setup.)

Which is a damn good -- an unpleasantly good -- reason.

I don't plan to spend a lot of time in the hospital, but of course no one does. If I did have to stay away from my computer for an extended period of time, paying my bills would become an unbelievable pain in the ass. I'd have to ask my sister to do it, meaning I'd have to walk her through all kinds of passwords and shit, and who needs that?

I'm resisting because, as I said, I kind of enjoy paying my bills, and I'd have to adapt my system considerably to accommodate auto-pay. But I'm thinking it might be time, very soon, to just bite the bullet and do it.

Any of you use auto-pay to the max? How does that work for you?

Guitarist Pat Martino was born on this day in 1944. Here he is with his trio playing "All Blues" in 2001:

Here he is in 2002 with his trio along with fellow guitarist John Scofield playing "Sunny":

Not so fun fact: In 1980 Martino suffered a near fatal seizure. From Wiki: "The resulting surgery, which removed part of his brain, left him with amnesia and no recollection or knowledge of his career or how to play the instrument that made him successful." In other words, he had to start over completely from scratch. The good news: He made a complete comeback, and in 2004, he won the Downbeat Reader's Poll for Best Guitarist.

Back when I was a wee young EQ, the very first vinyl 45RPM record I bought was Dolly Parton's "Here You Come Again." I was OBSESSED with that song and drove my parents up the wall because every time it came on the car radio, I would demand that they turn the volume up to full just so we could be treated to that glorious harmonizing. Since then, my musical tastes have undergone several quantum shifts (disco, funk, soul, new wave, easy listening/yacht rock, rave, navel-gazing indie pop, smooth jazz, old school jazz, vocalizing, EDM/trance and, most recently, Broadway) but I never ever forgot that my first-ever record was Dolly-style country.

My family and I used to watch her on the TV. We also had a couple of her albums, along with Alabama and Glen Campbell.

But this is this Administration.

The mid-terms are going to be a cock up for generations. Fat Diaper and his enablers are going to try everything to fuck up voting, if that doesn't work they'll fight every race in court, and when that doesn't work, they'll just refuse to accept the results. And when that doesn't work....what they want in the first place; violence. "When do we get t start killing them?" Remember that dude? That's the plan.

Oliver Furman's PA's avatar

Gonna be a shitshow.

ManchuCandidate's avatar

But like every plan they think that somehow they'd win especially the violence one.

I think they're going to regret that.

Should it matter, can't we just appoint our own electors regardless of how the vote comes out.

The Constitution clearly and unambiguously assigns the administration of elections to the states. Does the Constitution no longer count?

swmnguy's avatar

Well, you see, we've got budget problems. Cutbacks. We've had to go the "Right-Sized" Constitution. You'll see how much more efficient it is when we print it up and distribute it.

Look for it in your mailbox in about two weeks.

This is what will make most of their election fuckery difficult to actually pull off. They're trying, and so far failing, to bully states into doing what they want.

G-7 in Space's avatar

How hard will they need to bully Mississippi??

Diane's Less Hostile Username's avatar

I'm in OK and we aren't making any changes. OK is VERY proud of its election system. They are NOT taking suggestions.

G-7 in Space's avatar

I imagine Louisiana will be happy to comply....

Diane's Less Hostile Username's avatar

They are going for that orange bag of shit anyway.

MRK's avatar

Oh, some states are willing to go along with it, of course. But those aren't the states they're trying to intimidate.

Diane's Less Hostile Username's avatar

Just a note of pedantry: It's a "bribe" or "blackmail" if the outcome behavior is something other than what the person normally would do.

It's a "reward" or "reinforcement" if the behavior is something the person would do anyway.

MRK's avatar

People want to believe there are only a very small number of evil assholes, and that they're manipulating everyone else into doing evil shit. Rather than the reality that there's a sadly large number of evil assholes, and sometimes they want the same things.

G-7 in Space's avatar
