I've heard a lot of flap that this is simply a race issue. It isn't, and here is why. Jean was the kind of guy you'd want your son to be. He went to school, got his degree, he was involved in campus life, he was a leader, he had many friends, he got a great job at Price Waterhouse... he was everything most people would want in a son.

This transcends race. That's why, I believe, the jury convicted Guyger. The police association tried to make Jean into "your typical black guy" in Dallas, and it just didn't work. Even the allegations that they'd found marijuana in his apartment didn't stick, and were ridiculous. Who cares? Weak sauce.

Yes, this was a victory for people of color who have suffered disproportionately from police violence. And yes, I think that Guyger is a racist. I just think that it might be a wake up call for a lot of people of all stripes.

It was always all about her. She is a trained first responder and she did nothing to try to save his life. Her uniform and gloves were spotless. She was more concerned about how she was going to extricate herself.

I was able to watch the video and cry because of the guilty verdict. Had it been otherwise, I couldn't have watched or listened. I'm so sorry that beautiful voice has been silenced, and hope the sentence is appropriate.

I'm an atheist Jew, and found a very welcoming and supportive spiritual community where I can learn and grow as a person. And the music is phenomenal.

I know the time will come when I will be ready to watch that video, but not today, not yet today.

True, but limiting the options for basis of appeal does matter. There's always SOMETHING that can used, but the judge here at least got rid of one.

Nope. No back story. If there were mitigating circumstances the defense would have presented them. Just a white woman and a police officer acting on her privilege.

I cannot breathe easily until I hear the length of time she is sentenced to serve. It better be a fair amount. Long enough for her to really, really grasp the enormity of what she has done, and the depth of the loss his loved ones feel now that he is untimely gone.

And I can't stop thinking of Mr. Jean sitting on his OWN couch in his britches eating a snack and minding his OWN business in his OWN home when this entitled asshole took a break from sexting a married co-worker to burst in to HIS apartment and shoot him.

I also suspect she might not have been found guilty at all if she were a cop dude. We've seen how that does.

Make no mistake, had she been a white male officer, the outcome would have been different. As a female, she is only slightly less disposable than Mr Jean was in the eyes of the status quo.

I'm heartened by the verdict, but I'm not fool enough to think that it represents a trend.

The fact that the prosecutors were white men allowed the white jurors to hear them in a way they've wouldn't have heard prosecutors who weren't. The fact that they strategically avoided discussing race also allowed the white jurors to hear them. The fact that Jean isn't African-American also made it easier to them to paint him as human, despite his taste for marijuana. The fact that she faced a multi-racial, multi-ethnic jury allowed reason to prevail. Race is always the central factor in these cases.

I can get why the dressing up for church thing happens - it comes from the traditional belief of showing one's best in respect for the deity. I like to put on my most beautiful stuff when I go to circle myself for that reason. But too often it turns into showing off or one-upping others, and that's not cool. It's certainly not anything Jesus would approve of, in fact he preached directly against that sort of thing. "White-washed sepulchres" and all that.

Don't be an arsehole don. We get it, you think you are superior because you are an atheist. No need to mock Jews for thanking G-d.Dick.

Ten years. Ten fucking years for wantonly and cold-bloodedly taking a life. And yet there are a number of trolls who will keep insisting there is no such thing as white privilege in America.

Ten years. She got ten years. During the impact statements today, Jean's younger brother stated that he didn't want her to go to prison. He only wanted her to accept Christ into her life. Then he asked the judge if he could hug her, which she did. It was touching to see the power of forgiveness.

She deserves more time, though. The only good thing about it is that she will have to sit in prison during her appeal.

Dallas is gonna be a hot town tonight. There are a LOT of angry people there right now.
