This is what I don’t get about all these business oligarchs being so gung ho on Trump. Yeah, he has pro business leanings, obviously, but anybody with an ounce of sense in their head should realize he’s also really, REALLY bad at business. There’s always unpredictability in the market, but there’s unpredictability and then there’s absolute chaos, and Trump is nothing if not chaos.

They do not care about their companies. Only their personal piggy banks

Actually better for them if the economy slugs out, cause then they can "lay off" workers and the ones who remain better be happy with a wage cut

The biggest impact of the Chinese tariffs will probably be on prescription medications. I’m reading both price increases and shortages.

If living in the USA didn’t drive one crazy their citizens wouldn’t need to take so many drugs to cope with life.

Why is it Canada or Mexico or China’s fault that people like the weirdo

j.d. vance’s mom are junkies?

Also, the reason Canada is responsible for only 40 pounds of fentanyl entering the United States is that they diverted the rest of it to Vancouver.

If you look.at the trade items between the US and Canada, there is basically an American balance of trade surplus, not a deficit. The US deficit in goods runs around $60 billion a year but the US has a surplus in services like banking and insurance of about $20 billion, reducing that to only $40 billion. But the biggest export from Canada is oil and gas, about $100 billion. Because while the US is producing more oil than it uses, much of it is from fracking. US refineries are not set up to process that grade of oil. So we buy the heavier crude oil from Canada and sell the fracked oil to China, Japan, and Europe. So for every barrel of Canadian oil we buy, another foreign country is buying a barrel of American oil that US refineries cannot use. Which makes our overall balance of trade in that type of oil zero. Japan is paying us and we then pay Canada.

So looking at trade with Canada minus the oil from Canada that we get reimbursed for by selling oil to China and Japan, the US has a trade surplus of around $60 billion with Canada. In fact if US refineries reworked their processes to handle fracked oil we would be buying little or no oil from Canada. Another comparison is, say, Canada makes only blue widgets, the US only red widgets. But US cars need blue widgets so Ford and GM order $10 million blue widgets from Canada, which is a negative balance of trade with Canada. But China needs $10 worth of red widgets for their computers and buys them from the US. So for the US the trade balance in widgets is zero, we bought widgets from Canada and sold the same dollar amount of slightly different widgets to China.

idk about tossing in our banking in there. That is global anymore, can't really break it up and tally that per country, what with them having branches in those countries to, can we?

Isn't it amazing how easily imaginary problems get solved? Just the other day, I eliminated the unicorn infestation of my front lawn!

(That's obvious fantasy, of course. I don't have a front lawn.)

Expand full comment

Well, if you ever get a lawn and you ever get infested with unicorns, try to get rid of them with rainbow colored Skittles sprinkled all over the lawn. They will come around, eat the Skittles and then require very expensive dental work which will bankrupt them. Oh. And charge the unicorns a tariff. $1 per Skittle.

If and when they eliminate the Department of Education, it's important to stress, whenever anywone says that "The US educational sucks" to point out that there is no longer a system at all. It's mostly been that way for years, but now there's absolutely no reason anymore to even associate Mississippi's "schools" with Massachusetts. MA goes from being lumped into the middle with the rest of the states to actually being one of the best educational systems in the world.

So over in dimension J-7/sbd*4 Canada's Prime Minister is Robertson Davies who discovered that the legendary Fountain of Youth is actually Niagara Falls and routinely goes over the falls in a goddam barrel to knock up to 35 years off his apparent age. Although that dimension's RD does write many things he is mainly known as the Badass Party leader and has been PM of Canada for about 40 years. His personal bodyguard is a 500 member motorcycle club known as the Rude Pricks. His approval rating in Canada has never dipped below 78%. He personally negotiated the tariff tiff with that dimension's version of Trump. Trump had to promise to quit looking at Canada funny and stop the off-the-wall shittalking before RD made him do that with a boot up the ass. In return RD agreed to take Maelania back to Canada on the sissy seat of Robertson Davies" Triumph Rocket 3.

***But oh hey, fine print, no deal on that 10 percent tariff on goods from China! That just went into effect, so hope you’ve stocked up on … just about everything. Cell phones, computers and electronics, clothes, games, car parts, shoes, cookware, Barbies …***

It's amazing that Assmouth declares victory with Canada and Mexico by getting nothing and yet he's *still* gonna fuck up the economy because China isn't afraid of him. Xi has other sources for anything it gets from the US, and he played Assmouth last time, so knows how it's done. At least it's still winter, so American farmers don't already have their soybean crops in the ground.

And then the MAGAt was (something) like: "nuh uh yew dont know what your talking about shut up your stupid poopy face"
