I gotta stop.being late to these Great White North parties. It turns out that "skookum chuck" is an incredibly rich bit of Chinook slang, and it only adds to the hilarity that it also matches the diminutive of a foreign King's name. Clearly, Andrew is the best Canuckistan correspondent Wonkette has ever had.

I humbly suggest "skookum" is either an ironic adjective, or straight as a noun; this from an Pennsyltuckey Amero who loves English royalty yet does so with at-arms-length realism to severely curtail said love 😏. Also, yet another quality piece, Lord Andrew of Fleming!🙇‍♂️

skookum — adjective

1 Excellent, impressive.

2 Big, strong, durable, reliable, trustworthy, doughty.

— noun

1 An evil spirit or woodland monster/giant.

Last night I watched “The Mountainhead,” a new movie released on HBO. It’s about 4 techbros who spend the weekend at the new mountain retreat of the poorest guy in the group, who is only worth hundreds of millions of dollars (the rest are multi-billionaires). The one who is identified as the richest man in the world has just released an AI program on his social media site, which causes worldwide destruction as deepfakes circulate and cause conflict every fucking where. NPR has a good review:

https://www.npr.org/2025/05/31/nx-s1-5413129/mountainhead-review-hbo-movie-steve-carell

Not as good as Mickey 17 (also streaming on HBO), which absolutely skewers MAGA, but still pretty good. This shitshow of an administration is apparently inspiring a lot of new entertainment.

I can give a real example of what happens when high end tech people meet. We had a bit of a get together a couple of weeks back, people from my first US job. I hired Mr S there ... well, I hired most of them, really, apart from Rick.

When we got bought by shit company, most of us transferred over, apart from A. He stayed with another company. Dude was getting paid six figures and didn't really have to work, so he was loving that.

I got let go from shit company and spent eight months unemployed (that got hard after about five months) then got hired again and immediately started trying to recruit people I'd worked with before. J was difficult be she'd been put in charge of changing shit company's backend to microservices, and she was feeling it. I got Mr S and D almost straight away. I also asked A but he was just living the life of a young chap with a high salary and no real work. Rick was doing similar. D had similar but was getting bored, so he came over.

Shit company booted J off microservices because they didn't know a goddamn thing, so I managed to get her the second time. OK, here we go. We transformed that bastard company. Oh we were a great team. Went through a NASDAQ float and all kinds.

Me and J are millionaires now. She owns two houses in SF, which is no mean feat. She wants to sell her Tesla because Enlo. She's probably worth more than me. Everyone else is doing well also too, but they regret not listening to me when I said "hey, come here, this is good" but hindsight is 20/20.

So what really happens is that J complains about her husband and kids, A says that dating is hard, Rick complains that Brentwood is too far from SF, I whinge about a broken racing car and Mr S hates Hamazone and wants out. We're whiners.

And that's the reality of Silicon Valley.

Expand full comment
oblivias's avatar

That's life, but it's too boring for television. Now if Mr. S had some grudge against you and rigged Mr. 27 to blow up when you hit, I don't know, 3rd gear, and J thought there was something hinkey about your death and got together with Mr. S (with whom she's having an affair and whom she doesn't suspect) and Rick (who's got an unrequited crush on J) to solve your murder, now you're talking. Also A whines about dating one time too many and the other three kill him. We should take this to MAX.

Well, yesterday started off rough but ended pretty good. After a long morning nap, I got my nails done, replied to a work email, and then picked up the condo and put away the groceries Walmart delivered. I watched a movie called The Deep End from 1970 and had my dinner and sat with my dog and cat until bed time. The movie was okay, not sure I really "enjoyed" it, but I can see why it's considered one of the greats. Plus it had music by Cat Stephen's who I LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Remember that week like 4 years ago when everyone was freaking out about drones in New Jersey? I guess Ukraine has given people something to fear. How's that gold dome going to stop an attack like this, I wonder, not that I spend much time worrying about International acts of war, I'm from Oklahoma, it's the domestics you have to worry about here.

Work this week will be catching up from last week when I was buried in fixing the mess my boss and I made out of some data. I messed up the data entry (oops) and she messed up the scoring of the materials. Specifically, she messed up the checking of MY scoring and managed a shit ton of summing errors. I NEVER have summing errors because I run everything through excel and check my data entry twice, so I am VERY confident in my scoring. Of the 30 or so scoring errors she said I made, I found 2 transormation corrects, pretty good on a set of 315 cases, better than our usual 99% scoring accuracy.

Climate change has brought really rainy June's to OK the past few years, and this year even more so. It looks like rain all week, including this weekend when I have training for my new volunteer job. Enough rain already.

The Alaska Republican senator has no qualms about criticizing the president. She could play a make-or-break role in pushing back on the legislation carrying his agenda.

Senator Lisa Murkowski was listing all the ways that President Trump’s efforts to slash the federal government had harmed Alaska, from the funding freezes on programs the state depends on to the layoffs of federal workers who live there, when she delivered something of an understatement.

“It’s a challenging time right now,” she recently told a crowd at a state infrastructure conference here in the state’s largest city. “I could use nice words about it — but I don’t.”...
