Good for her. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own cocoon we forget how truly awful its been for black people in this country. And in some ways, for Hispanic and Asian-Americans.
She's a freshman senator, so if you're judging her based only on her legislative accomplishments you're going to get a somewhat limited view of what she's done. That said, she has accomplishments as a senator and scores well on various platforms that measure apples-for-apples, politicians with her experience level.
It was interesting (to me) that, while working for the Office for Civil Rights at the US Dept of Ed. that the “default race” for me became black, because almost everyone working there was black. Someone asked me about a co-worker (about whom I’d been talking) and what his race was. I had no idea, though I saw him every day.
I’m not afraid when the police are near. However, I’m a middle aged white male lawyer. Not only am I facially a member of the elect; I’m in the fucking priesthood.
Couple of years ago, working my second dream job as a teacher aide in our high school (first was 32 years as a newspaperman) which took me to many mainstream classes, I was in a history class in a section about the civil rights struggle, the Black Panthers, etc., and the discussion came around to white privilege. Note that the class was at least half black. I spoke up at that point. "I'm as white as the driven snow," I told the class. "I love white privilege. I don't worry when a police officer pulls me over. I know the worst thing that can happen is that I get a ticket." Silence in the room. "It just breaks my heart that every single citizen in our country does not get the same consideration, black or white, because they should."
Yeah, that's fun. Any legislation passed?
