At my Catholic high school, the seniors took a 3-day retreat called Kairos. It was done in groups, which were selected randomly. It was intended to be a time to recognize and reflect on your feelings, and while everyone was skeptical going in, nearly everyone came back saying it was a great experience. During the retreat, designated Kairos student leaders would give a talk where they exposed some emotional vulnerability, which would lead to discussions and (obligatory) prayer. Like the opposite of Seinfeld, there was a lot of hugging and learning, and the secrets revealed on Kairos were sacrosanct.
One of the leaders when I went was a kid who was pretty relentlessly bullied. But unlike most bullying victims, he brought it on himself by being a petty, intolerant annoyance all the god damn time, and he knew it. He said he had a hard time connecting with people, and he didn't have any friends, and he was really working on it. We all saw him differently for the rest of the weekend, and, finally, he seemed to really, seamlessly integrate with his peers. It was nice.
Until something is done and the people ordering these actions are sentenced to long jail terms, it will keep happening. And as long as the actions favor the GOP, nothing will be done. Even if the Democrats take power. I respect Michelle Obama, but sometimes the high road is the wrong path to take. If you really want to drain the swamp, you have to get down in the muck yourself so you can clear whatever is clogging the drain.
