This is happy news. Now, if I could only stop worrying about Manchin and the No Labels alleged party...

Wait, I'm confused.

Didn't Sinema switch from Dem to "independent"? Is she planning to run as a Dem?

If she is, she's putting the horse before the cart, because she will first have to win the primary - and that, my friends, will not happen.

If she thinks she's going to run as an "independent" and get more than zero percent of Democratic voters, she's certifiably insane.

She is not planning to run as a Dem. Yes, she is certifiably insane.

My mom lives in AZ now. I don't think she's fond of the Rs*, but I'm pretty sure she thinks Sinema's nuts.

*She voted for Heidi Heitkamp back in the day.

"making her the first Independent to win a three-way statewide race in American history."

i mean Murkowski won a *write-in* campaign to win a statewide race. that was "independent" of any party apparatus since Republicans wanted tea- (and carpet) bagger loon Joe Miller. in 1990 Wally Hickel won the Alaska governorship for a second time (was previously governor in the '60s) in a 3-way race running under the Alaska Independence party. i guess that doesn't count because it was -ence instead of -ent... but personal experience has shown me that *many* people registered as Alaskan Independence think they are merely "independent" voters vs. specifically part of the states wackass succession party.

My memory is that Murkowski had Democrats to thank for that win. The Republican nominee was a nutcase. It was so long ago now, my memory is otherwise vague about the status of any Democratic party candidate. I think they have some weird voting system - first past the post?

yes. she was primaried by a teabagger nutcase. but she still won a three-way statewide race by write-in and it doesn't get much more 'independent' than that.

first past the post isn't weird and is in fact the standard? only since 2022 in the last election has Alaska switched to the modern ranked choice voting. but only Alaska and Maine use that. Nevada might use it in 2026. everywhere *should* use it but conservatives hate it as it is more fair and detrimental to extremists and have banned it in several states. has zero relevance to the Murkowski write-in win though.

My point was, Dems got her the win.

the claim that was made that i was addressing was : "making her the first Independent to win a three-way statewide race in American history."

i do not see Democrats mentioned in said claim.

Except you were replying to me and the quote you cite wasn't anything I said.

you most assuredly were the person to reply to my top level comment. a top level comment where i quoted the article itself showing that Sinema was making an inaccurate claim. that was what my comment was about.

the claim they made did not mention Democrats. my initial comment did not mention Democrats.

however your initial reply mentioned Democrats in your very first sentence. as if that was somehow pertinent to the claim i was refuting (it was not). i did not say you made the original claim. i simply re-quoted the claim showing again that Democrats writing in for Murkowski was not particularly relevant to what i was addressing.

i suppose you can triple-down and insist Democrats voting for Murkowski somehow magically makes the Sinema claim that she'd be "the first Independent to win a three-way statewide race in American history" magically correct. but in reality it would not as bringing that point up doesn't make any difference either way in refuting the claim.

basic reading comprehension is key.

she really doesn't get our state does she? Thing is, um, how do I say, AZ has some deep set misogyny, so that leaves out most of the GOP and a LOT of independants. Some of these forkers WILL cross party lines NOT to elect a woman (part of Hillary's problem here in backneck AZ say Prescottish) That misogyny is bipartisian and runs DEEP.

Then there is those of us who are like my dad (esp those of us latinx & lived here 1+ generation): service to ideals (putting you money where you mouth is) is VALUED. Heck my dad is ALREADY fanduding Gallego. Many of us here, we are a people of hope. Our families escaped horror so we could live. (saying Sinema has a racial tint and we KNOW her type. We've been HURT by her type time and time again). Gallego is giving us better alternative.

All I can say: her staying in splits off the pendejo independants and utterly splits the GOP vote...so yeah jejejeje (the universe plays the LONG game. She remembers)

Sinema knows "Independent" isn't an actual political party, right? The independent voters aren't going to look at her and think, "she's one of us, so I MUST fill out the little bubble next to her name! No dirty elephants and donkeys for me! It's Vote Party Line all the way!"
