My step-daughter who lives in LA says Raman is the better choice because she has better relationship with a person who is relentlessly fighting city corruption, always a thing with large public bureaucracies unfortunately.
I just reviewed the text of the 3 ballot initiatives. The only one I'm considering voting against is #3 because it creates a new "special purpose fund" out of state revenue (Upgrade and modernize 911 call systems across the state. On the face of it, it's a good reason. My 2 issues are that
#1 I'm been through the text and I don't see any controls at all - what's the budget and max amount, what happens to funds left over, directives that prevent officials from using the fund for other purposes, etc. How will the selection process be done to select a system and vendor?
#2 I think this should have automatically happened without amending the constitution out of the regular budget. Sounds like they have had trouble fitting it into the annual budget or something. What is going to get shorted to do this? I suspect social services for the poor, not bait money to get companies to move here or subsidies for our masters.
Thank you for this coverage. Judging from the comments, there aren't many Angelenos among your readers. As others have written, being a big city mayor is a thankless job. Karen Bass is a long-time community activist and public servant; she was my Rep. in Congress before running for Mayor and held accessible telephone town halls for years. Nithya Raman also cares and has worked hard as a City Council member.
Being the second largest city in the nation within a huge county, and not having control over the school system, health or welfare systems makes problem solving much more challenging. I wish them both well.
I’ve reported extensively on Bari Weiss’s year-long reign of terror atop CBS News. I’ve heard about newsroom clashes with Weiss and her deputies, and concerns over the David Ellison-installed leadership injecting their pro-Israel and other biases into the network’s coverage.
But what I heard on audio I obtained from yesterday’s “crazy bonkers” editorial meeting at the CBS London bureau in the aftermath of press coverage of the network’s handling of an Oct. 7 story is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. You won’t believe what she said about Benjamin Netanyahu, or what she called the Palestinian death toll in Gaza. She also had a blunt warning for staffers who cross her.
CBS News foreign editor Shayndi Raice held a “completely unhinged” all-hands meeting, as one of my sources described it, at the network’s London bureau on Tuesday morning after a report said Raice aggressively pushed back on a correspondent’s story about the anniversary of the October 7 attacks.
During the contentious meeting, Raice – who was handpicked by pro-Israel editor-in-chief Bari Weiss this spring to lead the foreign bureau – warned staffers that they could be terminated if they dared to circumvent her editorial instructions. She also dismissed the Palestinian death toll in Gaza as a “magic number,” and defended excluding allegations against Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in CBS’s reporting by citing her personal conversations with friends in Israel.
You read that right. Apparently, we’re letting conversations with friends drive editorial decisions now.
Ta, Dok. Climate nerd here, too. Either of these women will be fine as mayor. We live (part time) in a city with a Democratic Socialist Mayor Mamdani, and it's been a breath of very fresh air. All my ballot measures (Meccalopolis votes Up Here, and I'll be canvassing with him for the local Ds) are ways to make it easier to Get! Things! Done! in a more streamlined process than we have at present. I'll be voting early in person. When we vote, we WIN!!
Trump on Bribe Force One: "You saw the brand new 747. You know, when you're given gifts, you taken them, right? ... when they give you a 747, you say two words -- 'thank you'"
I support Raman. City Hall needs a counterweight to the LAPD and the LA County Sheriffs, who showed a few years ago how f***** up things can get if the wrong married couple gets in charge. Law Enforcement is pretty fascist, and is most likely envious of the way ICE throws around its weight. The Skydance merger is a disaster for the SoCal economy, and the tariffs are killing the import/export hub that LA is. (What is left of Tiajuana by now?). Water conservation is needed, before the next drought hits. The universities are the hope of the future, as research hubs and to create an educated workforce to do the high tech jobs of the future that will make AI obsolete. If the state and the federal government wont invest in the people, the city and county will have to.
I've visited Los Angeles three times in the 2010s and tried to go out of my way to explore a little bit. Even after that, I feel like I've only seen a few parts of the city. It's huge.
I would imagine that being mayor of Los Angeles or New York is a little like being a governor of a "state within a state" that's so large, it's got a wide diversity of interests, needs, and cultures that have to be balanced.
At least they didn't spend an hour debating men in girls sports and school bathrooms.

Whee! Early voting started yesterday in Georgia.

I am glad there was nothing really controversial. But am I overly concerned about this measure?
No, not at all. You're being a responsible citizen. That's the LAST thing our current oligarchs want.

She read her stuff to the press. This may be a LD thing so I'm suspending judgement until she really fucks up.
So if Katie Z isn't actually an attorney, what is she?
I'm not surprised; Mad Lord Yam just picked her on her looks, in his eyes those are the qualifications.
Betcha betcha she lasts < 1 Scaramucci.
Will there be some report on whose bright idea this was?
Jimmy Kimmel: "Her reading is good for an 11-year-old."
Owwie ouchers! That'll leave a mark.
She is a Juris Doctor, as she has (maybe) a law degree.
So she graduated law school, but has never passed (taken) the bar exams? Wonder if there is a story there.
In Gym Jordan's case, I believe it was too chickenshit to take the bar.
I don't know of an LD which would require such an accomodation. Maybe a paralyzing panic disorder, but there's no evidence of that.
I think she was pretty scared.
Agreed. Her breathing was a tell. I felt sorry for her.
Sorry for her. I don't understand how. Sorry for her for being in a position of extreme power she hasn't earned and being nervous? Cry me a river!
TACO hired her to press her stuff.
... against his stuff?
(and yes, of course I apologize for the imagery)
Natalie at six o'clock!
Notice how completely Nat's dropped out of the picture.
It's all Katie, all the time.

Available to paid subscribers only. What did Bari say about Bibi and Gaza?
And now this horseshit will be spreading to CNN, HBO, Warner Brothers…
Jesus fuck...

He thinks he's such a card!
Hurr, hurr, hurr!
(mother-of-all eye rolls)
He's more machine than man now.
It's not a "brand new" 747. It's an old one they couldn't get rid of.
Didn't you see the brochure? It's a flying mansion!
"When they say quid... I say Pro fucking QUO!"
So, it was a solicited bribe.

Every day I get mailers from "Support The Police" groups attacking Nithya.
BUT
Then I saw how the LAPD gladly assists ICE in their kidnappings.
Which is why I voted for Nithya.
FITS PERFECTLY WITH THE 'ONE-DAY WAR VICTORY'
Trump’s new press secretary faces scrutiny over claims to be a lawyer -- The Guardian
If she has a law degree, she's a lawyer.
If she claims to be an attorney, she has to show she's passed the bar in at least one state. (Not China)
Chicken Noodle Network says she's not.
"May I approach the bench, Your Honor?"
"I move for a Bad Court Thingy."
Maybe she's just a law-talkin' gal.
Just finished that episode five minutes ago!

I’ve got a bad feeling about the OT.
I'm sure it will be about rainbow sparkle ponies, puppies, and kittens ... that are being murdered and live-streamed by Stephen Miller...
It will be about a very ugly person, guaranteed.
