Hey ladies! New York Times columnist David Brooks would like to have a word with you about the Women's March this weekend. He thinks it was all very nice and cute of you to try, but you failed (by having the largest protest in the history of the United States?), and he'd like to help you see the error of your ways!
Why is it that white males tend to label anything that doesn't follow their ideas "identity politics", while being completely blind to the reality that they are engaging in "identity politics" as well?
I suppose it's not surprising that a condescending ass like Brooks would miss the entire point, but it's also all of a piece with the supposedly "liberal" NYT, which also ran a piece on what a miracle it was that the saintly men of a NJ town could care for their own kids for a day while their womenfolk went off to march. https://uploads.disquscdn.c...
Shorter David Brooks: "Liberals should try succeeding by acting exactly like conservatives". Lick my taint, Brooks. And go look for a salad bar at Applebee's afterwards.
"...the dynamism of capitalism..."?? "...biblical morality..."??
Did this Brooks guy ever have a real job? You know, like carrying boxes or digging holes or frying bacon or anything? Or has somebody always paid him to type bullshit? Well, I can type bullshit, and I'm tired of carrying boxes, digging holes, and frying bacon. So maybe the New York Times should hire ME, and then we could talk about the dynamism of socialism and secular morality. Call me, NYT; I'm available.
Brooks is right if you can curb your anger for a few seconds. This week it's women marching, next week it's the LGBT's, then the union workers, then the environmentalist. And what does it achieve? You feel good but it doesn't change anything. It needs to be angry Americans against the buffoon and chief Trump. 10 million marches.
You don't get it. Any politics that marginalizes and disparages any group is not inclusive. As I said, the problem is not in focusing on marginalized groups, it's in being dismissive of rural and small town whites in the process. One does not require the other. You seem to think that you can catch flies with vinegar, and then denounce them for refusing to take the bait.

It's a real turn-on when an irrelevant, pointy-headed twit mansplains things to me. By "turn-on," I mean "it makes me throw up in my mouth."

But balanced with naked greed, don't forget the naked greed part.
And not enough luxury vacations for David Brooks to write snobbish articles/plugs about.
You feel good but it doesn't change anything. We marched for Civil Rights in the 60s. Seen any "Whites Only" drinking fountains lately?

Guess what - this week it was women marching AND "the LGBT's...the union workers...the environmentalist."
We all marched together. That was the point.
It's only "identity politics" when it's not about THEIR identity...because if you ask them, they think they're the default option for people.
I keep wondering who was disparaging white rural people. I must have missed that.
Not so much reach out as reach around.
I think it would have been more effective in the summer...with more naked people. But, that's just me.
