'Witness in Reflecting Pool case conceded damage before canoeist touched water'

-- 'David “Davey” Hearn was indicted this month and accused of damaging the pool. He has pleaded not guilty.'

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/reflecting-pool-case-witness-conceded-damage-olympic-canoeist-davey-he-rcna589510

'A key grand jury witness in a case against a former Olympic canoeist accused of tampering with the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool testified that the area was already damaged and would have required repairs regardless, lawyers said in a court filing Monday. [...] The witness, who is not identified, was the only person who testified about damages, and said that the property had already been damaged before, authorities say, Hearn stuck his hands in the water, according to Hearn’s team.'

...

'Hearn’s team questioned whether there is enough evidence to show he caused more than $1,000 in damage to the pool, the threshold necessary to charge him with a more serious crime. The witness’ testimony, according to Hearn’s lawyers, “established that the pool had substantial preexisting damage requiring repair before any alleged conduct by Mr. Hearn.”'

Also, although its easy to put ever present climate change in the category of “inconvenient “ the reality is, for us simmering frogs, the raging, non stop hurricane of climate change is still coming. And already all year long, somewhere on earth, people are experiencing life changing impacts of climate change. Life ending as well. It is and has been for 30 years THE issue, and, except for Biden, America has chosen to minimize or outright ignore it. What climate change is saying in places like Bordeaux is “may I have your attention?”

I find it disgusting that there are so many deniers. It's just gross. Fucking pea-brains that we are held hostage to.

'A missing underscore sent innocent man to prison for 18 months'

-- 'When the first step goes wrong, bad results follow.'

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/07/police-missed-one-underscore-and-sent-the-wrong-man-to-prison/

'One missing underscore in a Skyrim-themed username put an innocent Nova Scotia man in prison for 18 months.

'A 2018 child-luring investigation, which began in Madison, Wisconsin, and eventually extended to Halifax, Canada, was based on a false premise.

'Police were looking for a man using the Kik messaging service under the name “fus__ro_dah” (two underscores after “fus”), but they accidentally requested records for the username “fus_ro_dah” (one underscore after “fus”). This one-character difference led them not to the perpetrator but to a Canadian man named Brandon Klayme.

'(Ars readers may recognize “fus ro dah” as the Unrelenting Force “dragon shout” from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.)

'Despite finding no evidence of the crime on his digital devices, Canadian police arrested Klayme in 2020 on child sex abuse charges. He was convicted after a trial in 2023 and sentenced in 2024 to 18 months in prison. He served the full term.

'Even after release, Klayme continued to fight his conviction. In the process of preparing his appeal, the username mistake that led to all these years of disruption was finally discovered. On Thursday, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal overturned Klayme’s conviction, writing: “Mr. Klayme is factually innocent of the offences. He should never have been charged, let alone convicted.”'

'Trump administration asks Supreme Court to allow new limits on mail ballots'

-- 'The appeal to the justices is part of a high-stakes push by President Donald Trump and his allies to put fresh limits on voting ahead of pivotal elections where control of the House and the Senate is at stake.'

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/07/27/trump-administration-asks-supreme-court-allow-new-limits-mail-ballots/

'The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Monday to clear the way for a sweeping executive order that would place major new restrictions on mail-in voting for November’s midterm elections.

'A divided panel of a Massachusetts-based appeals court last week upheld a federal judge’s block on the order, finding that it would “sow confusion” and “threaten disenfranchisement of many eligible voters.” Judges appointed by Joe Biden and George W. Bush voted for the block, while a Trump appointee voted against it.

'The appeal to the high court is part of a high-stakes push by President Donald Trump and his allies to put fresh limits on voting ahead of the pivotal elections where control of both the House and the Senate is at stake. Trump claims that voting irregularities are widespread, despite a lack of evidence.'

-- We are less than 100 days from the general election, and IIRC significantly less than that from several outstanding primaries. If SCOTUS is going to even *pretend* that the Purcell Principle -- that they themselves created -- is intended to do anything other than help Republicans, then they need to reject cert.

Further adventures in a comm/tech person's hoarder room. Mostly 1990s stuff, some of it at the commercial level: not for you Plebeians. Once had a cell phone yanked because some eBay programmer saw too many episodes of The Wire.

This time it's a manual + software for a QAM analyzer, which is a quiet gadget to check out what's traversing cable lines. Well, Google lost its shit and tells me I can't even have the manuals of anything coming out of this company that's involved in SIGINT. Oh come on, there's lots of QAM analyzers out there, just not by this one company that was bought by another secret decoder ring company. And certainly not the manual/software, unless you count the FOUR stashed at my pad and now on sale. I'd give you more details, but you could look it up, find my handle, and track me down to my safe house. Probably not even bring beer.

Anyway, it was a 1997 manual/software on PC-DOS 6.22. Not even blow jobs were classified in 1997. Fun fact: PC-DOS 6.22 was the last standalone version of Microsoft's OS in 1994, and as such is called the "gold standard" for 16-bit retro hardware setups. Yep, lots of shit happened in the 1990S tech world. We had the World Wide Web! Until now, you didn't know what the "www" stood for in URLs. It was classified.
