Of course this is a conspiracy. Ms. Hickox (if that's truly her real name) is obviously hiding her background for nefarious purposes. Her education, knowledge and experiences give her an unfair advantage in the argument. Governor Christie has no medical background, no wit and no razor-sharp brain at his disposal. In this battle he is like a chubby little babe, naked, with nothing to protect him. It is amazing enough that he can string together a few grunts and gurgles to form the germ of a thought on this subject, but then, WHAM, he's blindsided by someone who actually knows something. It's just another devilish left-wing plot to make the ignorant look stupid.

I keep telling you bed wetting wingnuts that you have nothing to worry about. The only people in America who have contracted Ebola are caring, decent people who were motivated to help others in need. You clowns are at ZERO risk...

Eh; it doesn't hurt to be over-cautious, and I doubt the troops will complain, considering it's a three-week paid vacation, probably with hazard pay continued through. If it carries over to another month, that's basically a month and a half of extra pay for being told to sleep in late and hit the golf course every day.

Most likely they saw what was happening back here and thought, "No way are we gonna get sucked into that Shitnado." So when they return they'll just quietly self-quarantine at their bases (so that no one can say that they didn't), keep a low profile (staying off the front pages), focus on their mission and let the civilian authorities hash it out among themselves. They probably do not at all want to become part of the story.

The pharma companies don't gain anything when a potential customer dies. They aren't trying to soak the poor but rather the govt. agencies and NGOs that provide aid to the poor. Those agencies are their customers. But they need the patients to keep on living so that the aid providers keep on buying from them. The providers are a cash cow for them so they don't want to kill it, but in order to keep it alive it needs to be fed (have access to plenty of poor people who need aid). This isn't necessarily a bad or cynical system (because it does get medicines to the people who need them), except for the part about soaking their customers, the aid providers. The pharma companies have an economic incentive (right along with the moral one) to provide products that are effective and life-saving and to insure that they get to the consumers who need them. They don't gain anything when an existing or potential market for their products is decimated by a disease that could have been ameliorated by one of those products.

There aren't any effective medicines that treat Ebola, so it isn't a matter of "evil pharma companies" withholding products or making them difficult to obtain. Such treatments simply don't exist at present. Ebola is a very rare disease and research into treatments and vaccines for it has proceeeded slowly in the nearly 40 years since it was discovered. Needless to say, this research is now being greatly accelerated.

When people recover from Ebola it is because their own immune systems have conquered it. It's the only way to recover from the disease right now. The challenge is to keep patients alive until their immune systems can catch up. People who were in pretty good shape health-wise prior to infection have a greater chance of survival because they are starting out with more physical resources. Incidentally, health care workers who have contracted Ebola and have fully recovered (a process that can take up to a year) are no longer in danger of contracting it because their bodies now have immunity. They can go back and start treating Ebola patients without risking reinfection.

Especially not a story as stupid as this one. They might get the stupid on their shoes, and that stuff never really comes out of good leather.
