I just finished a wonderful collection of Damon Runyon short stories. In many ways he's the American (or, at least, the New York/Broadway "in the Forties" Wodehouse). Although Runyon is more more into the last sentence O. Henry plot twist. And nobody, no body, can use the English language or mix a lighter word meringue than Plum.
I would like to be Psmith. Although Gally is tough to beat. So is Jeeves, for that matter. But I think I'd still go with Psmith.
