Any direct exposure to Islam would have been when he lived in Indonesia, which I understand is considered under Sufi influence. Basically Islam's equivalent of Unitarians.

A further thought is that, from what I have read and heard from people working in Muslim areas, a lot of the things "anti Islamists" get hung up on- inc the burkha- are more "Arab" than "Muslim". It's almost too bad, since plenty of weird and terrifying stuff goes on in Muslim nations outside the Arab sphere. Heck, even Iran isn't technically Arab...

Pussy-grabbing in NYC? We all know who that would be. Curious, who did she vote for in 2016?

No, they are just tolerated better. Fundies will always be out there telling those of their religion what subhuman scum they are for not being part of the cult/sect/faction. In a secular world they have two protections; the state is unlikely to haul them in for heretical preaching and it will also protect them from the followers of other sects etc who might practice a bit of culling of the herd.

If they lack clout in Latin America is probably the same reason it never took off in China. The existence of nativistic beliefs are still too strong (Chinese communism has strong confucian themes), they have a kind of blend of pre-Colombian faith with the violent and cultish elements of Christianity. Didn't happen in Nth America as those immigrants weren't interested in the spiritual health of natives or even enquired about them. They were there because they couldn't stand OTHER Christians.

However, it is a pretty interesting idea to consider. What if Arab sailors had gone West instead of East and landed in South America and not Indonesia?

The terrorist groups in that time were political, not religious. No matter what their backgrounds, they shared a common goal of imposing communist thought via action. And the USSR funded and trained those people, but they also funded and trained on of the most successful terrorist groups ever; the Provisional IRA.

The big change occurred when the State Dept decided to arm and fund religious extremists to carry out war against the Soviets by proxy. They knew people like bin Laden were essentially going to be unmanageable, it might have been the thinking that they would splinter and die out like political movements tend to do over time.

I think a more immediate issue is that Muslim/ Arab cultures have so far favored authoritarian regimes. The result is leaders like Saddam, who gave lip service to fundamentalism but made sure to keep any rabble rousing directed outside his own borders. I have also further pondered whether some nations , cultures and groups are simply incapable of religious militancy. The Bosnians and Albanians offer viable examples, with significant parallels to the Latinos.

I was told nothing the Mercers have done is treason because even if they collided with other countries to throw out election, none of those other countries are our stated enemies. I'm still not sure that it matters whether Russia is technically an ally when what they did should change that.

What water fountains do bi/pan people use? Is it based on who they are currently seeing or want to be seeing? Or is it like once you touch a dick, that's it?
