Ya know, we had a cat once that would sit transfixed in front of the TV if there was a Zamboni on screen, watching it go back and forth. I first noticed this when we were watching the Traverse City Prospects Tournament and they just left the camper pointed at center ice during intermission. No commentary, just the Zamboni going in and out of frame. And Buffy watched it -- and watched for it -- making little chippy noises every time it came back into view.

Now I get it.

Our cat Dixie used to love to watch hockey with us. She would particularly pay close attention whenever the teams wore red sweaters (Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, etc.), but she really just loved the movement of the players across the screen, and would sometimes try to swat at them from the edge of our bed.

And since she had quite the mean streak toward the other cats, hockey did seem to be her kind of sport.

James's avatar

Dixie would have been right at home in our house — lots of red white and black.

Buffy used to lie on the giant dog bed next to my recliner and watch the Canes games with me. She was at least mostly and probably totally deaf, so she didn’t get spooked when I’d yell about something. She didn’t really have a mean streak, just a high hockey IQ. (And a foul mouth.. that cat would make a truck driver blush with some of the stuff she said.)

I miss that girl.

James Bond? Pshaw! There is nothing so classy and deadly as a streetgang of tuxedo cats. They're choosing a victim via the lon-venerated "spin the bottle of death" method.

There is only spin, or spin NOT. There is no why.

“ Looks like some disinformation is hitting the airwaves that ICE has been ordered to stop arresting people who aren’t criminals. Daily Wire has it, but Markwayne Mullin’s department of redneck Hitler shit is denying it.”

There are absolutely not enough criminals to justify the trillion dollars of small militia money being thrown ICE’s way………unless the subtext is “every undocumented alien is a criminal”

I know of one former rapper from Trinidad who’s undocumented, married to criminals, and keeps encouraging people to do things like vote in elections even though that would be illegal for her

On the Child-Rapist-in-Chief's refusal of Iran’s offer to resume peace talks...

"Look, agreeing to negotiate should be a no-brainer. Donny just had a win dropped right into his lap, and he’s too fucking dumb to realize it.

Do you know what would happen to the price of oil, if Dear Leader were to announce that he’s resumed talks with Iran? it would immediately plummet — five weeks before the midterms. Think of the boon that would be for Republicans.

But Donny won’t do that, because he has no ability to think strategically..."

Interior house painting is totally DIY possible. I've done two of my own houses with lasting, durable results. And I'll tell you my wife is a hard-ass judgy customer.

GiggleSnort's avatar

I can paint, but these days, I outsource. I am an Old: wife doesn't want me on a ladder. That's my excuse. But I also don't like the prep, the process, or the cleanup, and my skillz are not up to judgy standard.

How about a little good news in the polls? NH has an open Senate race with current rep Chris Pappas going against John E. Sununu. For most of the year, the UNH poll (which I participate in) has had Pappas with small lead over Sununu with Sununu actually leading by 2 in August. Now Pappas is up 50-42 in the most recent poll. He had a bit of a fight in the primary with Karishma Manzur taking about a third of the vote. Ordinarily he would have cruised but a lot of us here wanted change. I think Pappas did well because of "electability" vs. Sununu.

Now that Pappas has won, the progressives are all in for him. Independents are leaning his way, which is the largest cohort of the electorate. I was a bit worried about the race because of the Sununu name but Assface is dragging the GOP down. I feel much better after looking deeply at the results of the 35 page poll report.

Polls aren't votes, I know, but the results have been accurate in the state for the past few elections with no big upsets or surprises.

<Nearly all progressives (97%) along with majorites of socialists (86%), liberals (84%), and moderates (64%) support Pappas, with a large increase among progressives (+18 percentage points) since August. Almost all conserva􀆟ves (93%) and most libertarians (84%) support Sununu, but only 33% of moderates support him, down 7 percentage points since August>

While we're still in the magical twilight of OT-land in this thread... I have been pondering physics problems recently, without any mathematics or actual physics knowledge to hinder my musings. Things like, how can a photon be 'massless'? How can light exist 'outside of' time? What does that even mean? Is the universe finite? How can we understand finitude, if we can't understand its opposite?

...And then, I think of how we humans struggle with these problems, and whether we will ever solve them. And I think of other living creatures on the planet, and how far beyond their capacity much simpler problems are: will a frog ever be able to understand, say, an internal combustion engine? Can a housecat understand the works of Shakespeare? No, and you must be kidding.

With these examples of simplicity staring us in the face, how can we not conclude that, per the mysteries of the Universe, we are that frog. We are that housecat. We are simply bashing our head against the wall of the lobster trap, and we are too dumb to realize where the door is.

These have been my thoughts of late.

helenasgarden's avatar

I like your mind. I marvel that scientists can conceptualise universes and realities that I can't even begin to understand. Visionaries all.

Rosy red ASS's avatar

When you understand that most humans don't understand the works of Shakespeare, you realize that the lobster trap is real.

satch's avatar

A lot of people don't understand internal combustion engines or Shakespeare either. You put gas into King Lear, step on the pedal, and take off...
