Well, this has certainly been quite a week for Hitler! First, Sean Spicer got in trouble for saying he didn't use chemical weapons on his own people, somehow forgetting that gas chambers existed and German Jews were actually "his own people," and then Larry Pittman, a Republican representative from North Carolina, announced on Facebook that Abraham Lincoln and Hitler? Pretty much twinsies!
Pittman was one of the architects of the dead-on-arrival bill to make same-sex marriage illegal again in North Carolina. In a since-deleted response to a suggestion that he accept that same-sex marriage is the law of the land now and get over it, he suggested that "getting over" same-sex marriage would be like getting over Hitler had he won, and then, for whatever reason, decided to declare Abraham Lincoln to be just like Hitler.
“And if Hitler had won, should the world just get over it? Lincoln was the same sort [of] tyrant, and personally responsible for the deaths of over 800,000 Americans in a war that was unnecessary and unconstitutional.”
Is Larry Pittman sad that he can't have a slave? Is that what this is about? This is especially interesting in light of the fact that Republicans have taken, now, to insisting that the Southern Strategy never happened and that there was never any realignment of the parties -- that Republicans have always been the "good guys" when it comes to civil rights, and all the black people have simply been fooled by the Democrats, who all just moved up North to continue being super racist. Or something! This sure makes that argument pretty awkward, no?
Or maybe, like Donald Trump, he just had no idea Lincoln was a Republican at all!
Perhaps someday Pittman and the "Hey black people, why don't you ever thank white Republicans for making you not slaves anymore, huh?" Republicans will get together and agree on a narrative!
In that very same Facebook post, Pittman was asked about HB 62, a bill he is advancing that would require doctors to tell abortion patients that their medication-induced abortions are "reversible." Which has been the hot trend these days in various states run by Republicans without a particularly good grasp on science.
Pittmann claims that reversible abortions are "very real science" that have saved 200 "babies," and that a doctor he knows -- who personally asked him to push the bill -- has a study coming out soon that will prove it!
Oh! For sure! That definitely sounds like a real thing, Larry. We're sure that study will come out real soon.
