And here I figured they would just talk Lindsey into a nice bed next to McConnell. I suspect the difference is that McConnell's state has a Dem governor while Lindsey's is a Repub.

How do they choose a stand-in at this late date? I guess the same way they're doing it in Maine?

Maybe's avatar

Probably much the same way they picked Caligula after Tiberius died. And likely with much the same results.

While, historically, South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union in 1861, it tried that trick much earlier in the 1830s when they didn't want to pay tariffs. Unfortunately for them, Andy Jackson (definitely no Saint) promised to raise an army of 30,000, march into South Carolina, and hang the first "traitors" they found. South Carolina backed off, momentarily. During the US Civil War, William Tecumseh, after laying waste to Georgia, did the same to South Caroline. Columbia, the capital of SC end up, essentially, burned to the ground. Although many blame Confederates rather than Sherman.

I hope SC Republican primary voters choose Nancy Mace, because her batshittery amuses me, and because of the many, many reasons SC general election voters won't vote for Andrews (decent human being, understands how vaccines work, thinks it is sad when children are killed by guns) at least misogyny won't be one of them.

I know people that worked with Nordine on the SC Council for the Blind. She may not actually be the worst.

She can't be given the large field of ambitious Repubs.

Nothing says “public service” like a Senate seat still warm from the previous occupant while every ambitious goblin in South Carolina starts measuring the drapes. Lindsey Graham spent decades turning proximity to power into a personality, and now his seat gets the same treatment: not a public trust, not a solemn responsibility, but a political folding chair for whoever can flatter Trump, survive the primary circus, and pretend the whole thing is democracy with a straight face. Appointing his sister as a temporary placeholder is almost too on the nose. The weather vane is gone, but the wind machine is already taking applications.

I have a different Michael Corleone quote for you, Nancy:

My offer is this: nothing.

Here is a fun thing. So last night I was checking on a building used in a movie I am modeling in sims, because I am totally that dork, and I stumbled on a blog about the 2008 sense and sensibility and how it was totes family friendly (duh, Jane Austen) but you need to que it past the first scene because it has sexuality which is not ok for a biblical family.

Once that caught my eye, I read the rest of the "review" and man do some people interpret characters interestingly.

Then was implored to buy some merch and I was all...but biblical women should not be making money instead of spending all her time serving her husband and kids!

I'm an atheist and only familiar with the 'Song of Songs,' but doesn't the Bible contain a lot more sexuality than Austen? These unholy critics are not only surpassing the Victorians (to be proper, books by male authors must be separated from books by female authors; I think if they mate you get bookworms), but they're close to passing the Inquisition.

Nice way to slap religious slapheads.

I am very live and let live. But that one amused me for some reason

Wow, suddenly the center left is getting on board with "defund."

Maybe's avatar

Defunding a group that does public harm is reasonable. The KKK is an example.

Another night passes with several Russian ships being set ablaze in the Azov Sea. 11 more ships were targeted and struck last night, making it 116 ships being hit the last 8 days.

Anyone else a little concerned with how fast Ukraine can pump these things out now?

Land Shark 🇺🇦 🏳️‍⚧️'s avatar

Yes and no. Yes, as long as America stays on their good side. No because Ukraine will equip NATO without the US.

Stulexington's avatar

My main concern is Iran probably has the same level of manufacturing capability, and they love selling to Russia.

As a non US NATO member country, what did the US expect though?

Yeah, when I get it it's great. When I don't I feel like it's the bar trivia host who expects you to read his mind. So many in-jokes and tropes.
