You know I don't think I'm made for this ugly, repulsive, hating, shithole country. I can't take the constant barrage of hate coming from all angles. My heart can't take it. My empathy paralyzes me with the never ending bad news.
The only control I have is my vote and that seems so farfetched and petty in the grand scheme of things. While I'll continue to vote until I'm dead I feel helpless the rest of the time. I remove myself from all news for weeks/months only to come back to worse. Makes the holidays look trite and assuming. I have no christmas spirit this year. I've done the decorating but there is no joy in it. I worry for us, Ukraine, the homeless, animals, the planet, starving kids, sick people...the list goes on for miles.

One does wonder how many times Donald Trump has to pull the rug out from under the press before people start to get how predictable he is. Trump has been bragging about how he can’t wait to testify in his own defense in his fraud trial in New York City, and many quarters treated this as an exciting opportunity to cover him on the witness stand. But anyone paying real attention would know that Trump was never going to testify of his own free will. The man is a narcissist, but even he isn’t stupid enough to believe his big mouth wins him any favors when the audience is anyone but GOP voters who have self-lobotomized with Fox News propaganda.
Trump played this game with the E. Jean Carroll trial, claiming he would testify and then never actually showing up in court. He disses his primary opponents from behind his phone screen, but refuses to debate in person. He will absolutely both promise to debate Joe Biden, and find some excuse not to. He even did this trick on January 6, declaring he would join the rioters and even putting up a nominal fight in order to do so. But he “let” the Secret Service stop him, even though they actually couldn’t if he had insisted.
The single most predictable aspect of Trump’s personality, besides his narcissism, is his cowardice. The reason this doesn’t hurt him with the MAGA base is they are the same: A bunch of tough talkers who fall apart at the first sign of real danger. That’s why even the Capitol rioters had to convince themselves it was a fantasy role-play before they rushed in. It’s why they were genuinely shocked when they got arrested
But even those folks were a tiny fraction of the base. Most of them prefer silly conflicts where they can act the victim without actually taking risks. Which is why harassing wait staff by refusing to wear masks was such a good time for them. All the drama of being a freedom fighter, none of the actual danger.
