It was a 914, which is basically a 2-seater VW. I had one myself a couple years later, and the absolute BEST thing about it was that it was so low to the ground, you could literally parallel park it in a space shorter than the car, because the bumpers were low enough to slide under the bumpers of the vehicles in front of and behind the space (especially if they were SUVs).I literally abandoned the car in Hopatcong NJ the 3rd road trip in a row that it stranded me.
They were cheap and crappy and woefully under-powered. They did handle like a go-cart, and on a perfect 70* spring day, with the roof off and a fresh tune-up, driving the cliffs overlooking the Hudson River, it's about a perfect car. So you have 1 hour/year of enjoyment, and 8,759 hours/year of hating the car. (Yet, if one in decent shape were to pop up for sale I would probably buy it.)
Pantyhose?ETA: I wrote that because some woman got up and started raving about all the wonderful things that come from fossil fuels, including plastics and pantyhose.
Get rid of the tax subsidies, and the price of gas will go up to a point where driving won't be the best means of transport any longer. Only then will public transportation be funded properly.
