I think Trump made an incredibly stupid mistake a while back by gleefully claiming full responsibility for the undoing of Roe v. Wade. Unless the universe has gone completely mad, that should cost him the election. He may be "shoring up his base," but most of the country does not agree with what has been done. Reproductive rights didn't use to a single-issue thing for voters, but now it will be. There are almost certainly a lot of supposedly conservative women out there who are hopping mad about this issue.

"...lot of supposedly conservative women out there who are hopping mad about this issue.." but will they vote for Joe because of it? Let's ask Tom Bradley about how well polling data is reflected in the voting booth.

I base my view on initiatives that have passed in red states by wide margins. Will they vote for Joe Biden directly? Maybe, or maybe they'll just leave the presidential section of the ballot blank. Either choice would help Biden. But I guess we'll all find out how it goes soon.

"[xxxx]," Harris will say, according to excerpts provided to POLITICO.

This is one of my least favorite aspects of our current information saturation culture. "Here's what they're going to say, now go watch them say it." Takes all the bite out of serious conversations, and lowers it to the equivalent of listening to your favorite song live, waiting for certain riffs.

I think “reproductive freedom” is fine given that republicans are already gunning for things like IVF and contraceptives in addition to abortion. It’s become a battle on multiple fronts now.

Expand full comment
fair_n_hite_451's avatar

Agreed. The fight is bigger than just abortion now. Not that that is not the central issue here, but the fight is FAR bigger.

Hell, this is now also a fight to stop Dem tax dollars in regressive states from being used to fund the liars in crisis pregnancy centers. Which is nothing more that state-approved grift. Funnelling taxpayer money to right wing donors who can turn right around and give it back to the right wing politicians.

And yet, where is the media outrage about that?

Expand full comment
Enbastet's avatar

I used to object to the shamefaced

use of "choice" like it was a selection at Baskin&Robbins, but "abortion " actually is too narrow now because contraception and IVF are also being targeted.

And a lot of voters do not know that.

The A word will be said aplenty, but the manic Gileadism needs to be called out across the board.

Meanwhile, the nationwide number of abortions has actually increased post- Dobbs.

(For a variety of reasons, including that pro-abortion states have made it easier to get abortions, people in anti-abortion states drive to neighboring states to get abortions, and it's easier to get mail-order abortifacients, both legally and quasi-legally such as a brown package from some India pharmacy.)

Where was the coverage of this past weekend's Women's March? I went to a small local standout, attended by mostly over 60's! Where are the younger people?. I could not attend a bigger event like in DC, this year. Mainly because access to plans was hard to find. That's where I've gone in past years, since 2017, for flawed but wonderful and empowering events. This year all I got from Women's March, were requests to donate for porta-potties! No requests to join a March or rally. No talking up planned speakers or events. I realize that organizing is very tough but where was the enthusiasm for "Defending Democracy"? The streets should have been flooded. The media should have been reporting on plans and then the event. March for Life got way more MSM coverage. Thank you Vice President Harris and President Biden. Now, can everyone else please start making some real noise from now til November?

but its existence speaks to the delicacy that was actual turtle stew - a meal fit for kings in the 18th C. There was a local foofaraw when, in 1754 a local grandee served up a turtle stew - prepared by his enslaved African with perhaps the worst slave name ever imagined: "Cuffy Cockroach" rage emoji puke emoji - to half the town over on Goat Island on Christmas Eve, and got everyone shithouse drunk. Carousing through the streets of the city singing drinking songs as they escorted each other home famously inspired the wrath of the local Quakers, who were put out by being woken by such louts before a work day, and wrote editorials in the local paper to say so - harumph!

I feel like all this abortion business -- an issue that is really, really important to, what, a mere 85-90% of Democrats/Liberals/Progressives? -- is gonna pull focus from the far more vital work of finding a few people who are making their decision based solely on their belief that Biden is personally blowing up houses in Gaza and putting them on my teevee to tell me they won't be voting for OHJB.
