I think Trump made an incredibly stupid mistake a while back by gleefully claiming full responsibility for the undoing of Roe v. Wade. Unless the universe has gone completely mad, that should cost him the election. He may be "shoring up his base," but most of the country does not agree with what has been done. Reproductive rights didn't use to a single-issue thing for voters, but now it will be. There are almost certainly a lot of supposedly conservative women out there who are hopping mad about this issue.
"...lot of supposedly conservative women out there who are hopping mad about this issue.." but will they vote for Joe because of it? Let's ask Tom Bradley about how well polling data is reflected in the voting booth.
I base my view on initiatives that have passed in red states by wide margins. Will they vote for Joe Biden directly? Maybe, or maybe they'll just leave the presidential section of the ballot blank. Either choice would help Biden. But I guess we'll all find out how it goes soon.
"[xxxx]," Harris will say, according to excerpts provided to POLITICO.
This is one of my least favorite aspects of our current information saturation culture. "Here's what they're going to say, now go watch them say it." Takes all the bite out of serious conversations, and lowers it to the equivalent of listening to your favorite song live, waiting for certain riffs.
I think “reproductive freedom” is fine given that republicans are already gunning for things like IVF and contraceptives in addition to abortion. It’s become a battle on multiple fronts now.
Agreed. The fight is bigger than just abortion now. Not that that is not the central issue here, but the fight is FAR bigger.
Hell, this is now also a fight to stop Dem tax dollars in regressive states from being used to fund the liars in crisis pregnancy centers. Which is nothing more that state-approved grift. Funnelling taxpayer money to right wing donors who can turn right around and give it back to the right wing politicians.
use of "choice" like it was a selection at Baskin&Robbins, but "abortion " actually is too narrow now because contraception and IVF are also being targeted.
And a lot of voters do not know that.
The A word will be said aplenty, but the manic Gileadism needs to be called out across the board.
"They would rather women suffer—horribly and needlessly—than be given easy, safe and appropriate abortion care. How is this pro-family? How is this pro-life?"
Because what these maniacs really are are anti-women.
Biden too old and too meh for you? Marianne Williamson too out there? Dean Phillips....who? Fear not, NH Primary voter, as you peruse the 21 names that are not Joe Biden, let your eyes rest on Paperboy Love Prince, and as you do, ask yourself "Where has he been all my voting life?"
Right? I follow Women's March official sites so got multiple requests for donations and had to try very hard to get details about locations and events. DC wouldn't even give details until you RSVP'd! Crazy!
Meanwhile, the nationwide number of abortions has actually increased post- Dobbs.
(For a variety of reasons, including that pro-abortion states have made it easier to get abortions, people in anti-abortion states drive to neighboring states to get abortions, and it's easier to get mail-order abortifacients, both legally and quasi-legally such as a brown package from some India pharmacy.)
Totally predictable. The men (it's nearly ALWAYS men) who pass these idiotic laws have no fucking idea how pregnancy works. And the women who vote for them are all prime examples of Aunt Lydia.
They are ignorant. They have no idea what the difference between a dilation and cuterage versus a dilation and evacuation is. They have no clue that the term abortion to a medical professional is very different from what lay people and politicos mean by it. Yet politicos and lay people are out there making ridiculous laws for healthcare professionals based on this ignorance. Incredible bullshit.
If I were them, I would go hard at the freedom aspect. "Americans love freedom. That's what we're all about. Freedom to say what you want. Freedom from government telling you what to do. What could be more intrusive or overreaching than a government that comes into your bedroom? A government that decides for you about the size of your family. A government that chooses what kind of birth control you can or can't take. A government that can force a young girl to carry her rapist's child and then let her face all the consequences of THEIR choice alone. That's not freedom! That's tyranny. Vote Biden/Harris 2024!"
Everything they do and say is hypocritical. Aren't they the ones decrying the administrative state and insisting on its destruction? Aren't they also the ones pushing Medicare Advantage plans on seniors which are nothing more than giant administrative office buildings designed to make money off of a vulnerable population.
Where was the coverage of this past weekend's Women's March? I went to a small local standout, attended by mostly over 60's! Where are the younger people?. I could not attend a bigger event like in DC, this year. Mainly because access to plans was hard to find. That's where I've gone in past years, since 2017, for flawed but wonderful and empowering events. This year all I got from Women's March, were requests to donate for porta-potties! No requests to join a March or rally. No talking up planned speakers or events. I realize that organizing is very tough but where was the enthusiasm for "Defending Democracy"? The streets should have been flooded. The media should have been reporting on plans and then the event. March for Life got way more MSM coverage. Thank you Vice President Harris and President Biden. Now, can everyone else please start making some real noise from now til November?
Where were the emails/social media posts etc about this years march? 2 days before the date I happened to see an FB post asking for rush donations. That was it. I asked all my female friends if they knew when the Seattle one was. No one even knew there might be one. I could not find any info on line. I had assumed they werent happening anymore
I believe the Women's March org has been sidetracked by infighting and issues about the Israeli/Palestinian nightmare. It's not new nor terribly surprising for a political org.
Fortunately, this is an election year and we have good strong loud candidates to take up the cause, but the MSM may need some urging to pay any attention at all.
OT: So if we can have Secret Agent Super Dragon, why not a Crawling Eye? So there we are. We can all become episodes of MST3K. We have a Werewolf around here. Just need a Soultaker to go with him.
most only know of it because of Lewis Carroll's mock turtle's lament
but its existence speaks to the delicacy that was actual turtle stew - a meal fit for kings in the 18th C. There was a local foofaraw when, in 1754 a local grandee served up a turtle stew - prepared by his enslaved African with perhaps the worst slave name ever imagined: "Cuffy Cockroach" rage emoji puke emoji - to half the town over on Goat Island on Christmas Eve, and got everyone shithouse drunk. Carousing through the streets of the city singing drinking songs as they escorted each other home famously inspired the wrath of the local Quakers, who were put out by being woken by such louts before a work day, and wrote editorials in the local paper to say so - harumph!
I met Joel Hodgson once and he was really cool. We just hung out and shot the shit. I didn't even realize it was him until afterwards otherwise I might have fanboy-frozen.
I feel like all this abortion business -- an issue that is really, really important to, what, a mere 85-90% of Democrats/Liberals/Progressives? -- is gonna pull focus from the far more vital work of finding a few people who are making their decision based solely on their belief that Biden is personally blowing up houses in Gaza and putting them on my teevee to tell me they won't be voting for OHJB.
I didn't realize Biden was personally picking out air strike targets in Gaza like LBJ did in North Vietnam.
I swear the "genocide Joe" gang was far more subdued about a U.S. president actually ordering our own military to bomb another country twenty years ago. And where were they when Trump was bombing Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan just before Biden showed up? The bad faith here stinks to high shit.
I've no doubt there are Palestinian-Americans and Muslims for whom it is a very personal issue. The real "outrage," though is nearly 100% driven by what's left of Red Rose Twitter. I honestly think they're just mad that Biden might get even a slight bit of credit for actually delivering on things progressives actually want done.
That's right. When you vote to 'send a message' you can be sure that after the whole long election night Joe Biden - the LOSER! - will wake up and say "Wait a minute - how did Uncle Matt vote? How did the Blessed Reverend vote? THumbs down you say? Oh, I am so ashamed - can they ever forgive me?"
I'm just glad the media has found an issue with some staying power. I'd pretty much lost track of all Biden's other horrible failures that were causing Democratic support to waver.
JEWWWWWWWWS!1!!!!111!!! Although, I thought we were supposed to call your people {globalists} or (globalists) or (((globalists))) or some such now, so that nobody would recognize the anti-semitism when it's hidden by such a clever secret code.
Sometimes I wish they would, and then I remember that the Jewish candidate who went furthest in his quest for the presidency was....Barry Goldwater. (Raised Christian though, but had Jewish ancestry)
I've always said that if any Nazi jackass or conspiracy theorist ever said something to me about Jews taking over the world, my response was going to be: "Well how can we help them do it faster? After all, they can't fuck things up anymore than the people who've been running the world for the last 2,000 years have. Let's give someone else a chance. You never know, things could turn out great."
Given the state of things now versus a few years ago, I was disappointed at the turnout for the Women's march this weekend in Phoenix. AND we were the location chosen to represent the national movement, given the 'battleground status' of our state in '24.
Gloria Allred was there and so was Jane Roe's daughter!
I mean, i was happy that people came out, but it was nowhere near the 2017 or later marches :(
Agree. I had to search for a little bit of coverage of the Phoenix march. It seemed like coverage and publicity ahead of time was sadly lacking. But thank you!
Oh for sure! When i pulled in to the Capitol parking lot, I'm like 'uhhhh, is there a march actually happening?' None of my friends who I'd attended with before knew about it, and i just went by myself.
They're just winning friends and influencing people everywhere, aren't they? When I get stuck in traffic thanks to protesters, I always say to myself "whatever these people are for, I am for as well, because it must be a good cause if they can fuck up my day like this."
The “pro-Palestinian” (actually anti-Jewish) crowd tries to make every damn thing about Palestine. (If they were actually pro-Palestinian, they wouldn’t be in favor of Palestine being ruled by a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, Jew-hating genocidal fundamentalist death cult)
Well..."if they were actually pro-Israel they wouldn't be in favor of Israel being ruled by a racist Palestinian-hating genocidal fundamentalist death cult." I know you have issues with Likud and friends but it's worth pointing out that sentiment cuts both ways.
Israel has elections, and Bibi will never win another one. The last election in Gaza (or the West Bank, for that matter) was in 2006. And as bad as Likud is, there's no comparison between them and Hamas.
I think Trump made an incredibly stupid mistake a while back by gleefully claiming full responsibility for the undoing of Roe v. Wade. And yet, where is the media outrage about that?
I used to object to the shamefaced
use of "choice" like it was a selection at Baskin&Robbins, but "abortion " actually is too narrow now because contraception and IVF are also being targeted.
And a lot of voters do not know that.
The A word will be said aplenty, but the manic Gileadism needs to be called out across the board.
Absolutely agree that "Remember, Remember the Fifth of Roe-vember" should be a Wonkette-branded T-shirt or bumper-sticker.
Or "I'm voting this Roe-vember because I support women"
Forgive me if you've already seen this. This is the extremism of the Wisconsin maggas on display last week. Who are these people?

Male patriarchal dominionism in the extreme.
So they’re gonna deliver a non viable fetus by caesarean - then what?
BIll the woman thousands of dollars after her health insurance says "we aren't gonna pay for the c-section of a non-viable fetus."
The emptiness of their brains is truly something to behold.
"They would rather women suffer—horribly and needlessly—than be given easy, safe and appropriate abortion care. How is this pro-family? How is this pro-life?"
Because what these maniacs really are are anti-women.
Insert Death Stare OR GRRRRR meme here — visible right here.
Even more sad is that that is not possible anymore.
So true.
Because "Reproductive Freedom" ALSO includes:
* Access to, and information about, birth control methods.
* Sex Education
* Accurate and reliable information about STDs and their treatments.
You know, all the other stuff that the MAGAts want to keep from you.
Yeah I don’t really have a problem with that. Harris is saying abortion and Biden is saying reproductive freedom. I think they are both effective.

$1000 gets you on the ballot. Gee, why doesn’t this state get to pick the president anymore?
My wish right now is that New Hampshire is the biggest loser in their primary.

Report: Mothers in states with abortion bans nearly 3 times more likely to die
https://www.axios.com/2023/01/19/mothers-anti-abortion-bans-states-die
And it's going to hit minotiry women and poor women way worse.
If I didn't know better, I'd swear that MAGAts hate poor and minority women.

Or completely ignorant of their own biological processes.
if they keep killing women
and shut down immigration
and deport millions, per plan
what do they think is going to happen?
They'll win elections?

"Bring back child labor!"
- wingnuts
(I wish I were joking)
Well, those kids don't need no education, they need to head to the fields and get mutilated by farm machinery.
GMTA.
P fucking S:
"The report also found that infants born in states with abortion bans were 30% more likely to die than those in supportive states"
They can't even get the pro-baby part of pro-life right.
jfc
I dunno. The Rs are going after IVF and most likely contraception as well as abortion rights. I think the term "reproductive freedom" captures that.
If I were them, I would go hard at the freedom aspect. "Americans love freedom. That's what we're all about. Freedom to say what you want. Freedom from government telling you what to do. Actually, they're probably more designed to rip off the Social Security administration.

I dunno, I imagine there are thousands of incels out there thrilled at the prospect of ANYONE coming into their bedrooms
This is exactly how you do it.
They're going after the 19th Amendment.

Oh, it looks like it was in Phoenix this year. I'm surprised I didn't hear ANYTHING about it until now.

Women's whatnow? Were they standing behind the few dozen Loud Boys that were having a Very Important Protest in NYC?
I didn't even hear that they happened this year. Not local, not state, not DC.
Same.
The MSM ignores left leaning activity in favor of talking to fuckwits in Ohio and Oklahoma diners.

Sometimes nuance is a bit beyond us, too. E.g. being pro-Palestinian does not always equal being anti-Jewish.
True. But being pro-Hamas IS equal to being anti-Jewish.
I can't blame the Israelis OR the Palestinians who wish to be rid of Hamas. Hamas is fucking evil.
Oh, absolutely.
Was just about to say I had seen a comment yesterday suggesting as much.
