One day in the mid 90's, while walking along a sidewalk in downtown Albuquerque, I saw a uniformed member of the United States Air Force. This was not unusual in Albuquerque, as there is an Air Force base there. What caused this passing, casual event to remain in my memory was that this officer, a young captain, was a black woman. This was not a sight I would have seen when I was a boy, and it reminded me of the positive changes that have happened in America in my lifetime.

If the jury can't come to a unanimous decision, it will be the first time Trump will be accused of being hung.

I'm certain Trump supporters will try something, I just don't buy that they'll pull it off, and I expect more to be done after he loses to discredit the result and try to get him in anyway than any attempt to actually win.

You don't need as much as you think you do, but it's okay to treat yourself occasionally.

Being famous isn't as important as being kind. If you can be famous and kind, do it. If you can be famous for being kind, do it. But if you have to choose one, choose to be a kind person. Be the person that if God or aliens showed up and debated about destroying humanity, they would look at your life and see there's something good about us worth preserving.

People will try to get you angry to take advantage of you. Don't let them.

Test everything. Hold on to what is true. And "test everything" doesn't mean watching an Internet video.

Family is the most important thing. Whether it's your birth family or your found family, they're the ones who will stay by your side when everyone else and everything else is gone.

Reading is also the most important thing. Books are the stories and lessons of our collective past. Learn from them and realize that nothing is new. There have always been people who wanted to ban them. They are always wrong.

Play games. Board games. Video games. Sports. Games your future toddler makes up. Games remind us to stay young and an important part of life is play.

No mater how manly you are, if your daughter or son asks you to dance, get up on your tiptoes and twirl.

Most of a relationship is just showing up. If you can't think of something to say, then sit next to your friend or loved one in silence just being there. If they cry, hold them. If they talk, listen. If they want your advice, give it. But showing up is the first and biggest part.

If a job needs doing at home, do it. Do it without complaint. Do it even if it's not your turn. Unless nobody else ever does it, then hide their phones and change the password on the wifi router until it gets done.

Be honest, but don't confuse honesty with cruelty.

Faith can be important. Faith can be the only thing keeping you sane when everything looks bleak in the world. Whether that's faith in god or faith in humanity or faith in reason doesn't matter. But even when it appears that justice and honor are lies, faith will tell you that they're still worth believing in.

I've rambled enough.

The phone thing works.

One summer I texted my grandson if his mom needed anything.

He never texted back. Ok. People are driving or busy. Fine.

I went over and saw 3 kid's phones in a basket on top of the fridge.

And 3 kids doing chores.

I laughed. Daughter did not ask what I thought was funny.

She is wise.
