Yeah, well, I know a guy who went on from being a hippie to dedicating his adult life to helping poor and disabled people as a social worker, right along with his hippie chick wife, who pursued the same type of work for her entire adult life. Both of them are now older and poor as dirt themselves and are facing rather uncertain futures because no money, but don't regret a single day of their former careers. In fact, I know these two people quite well, in contrast to your fellow who you only saw for a few minutes while riding the bus. Politically speaking, neither one of them could by any stretch ever be mistaken for conservatives.
By the way, during and after college in the 1970s I encountered quite a few long-haired drug-using guys who were in fact entitled frat turds from affluent families, and who embodied the very antithesis of "hippie." They held stupid conservative political views then, and no doubt continued to espouse right wing nuttery after college. Were they hippies? Perhaps, but only if your definition is extremely superficial and not backed by any knowledge or understanding of post-WWII countercultural movements. In other words, if you use a definition of "hippie" that omits any legitimate and meaningful elements of the youth counterculture that arose during the 1960s, then yeah, maybe by that twisted bastardized criteria they were.
Louie Gohmert really liked "A Christmas Carol" until Scrooge got all sappy and nice to Bob Cratchitt. Dickens really had something with that part about prisons and workhouses.
